Another excellent line-up from Infant Tree, featuring New York based saxophonist, composer, and improviser, Sam Weinberg - both solo and in a duo alongside Theodora Laird, as well as GAX, the duo of Seymour Wright and Vasco Alves.
Sam Weinberg is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser from New York City. Throughout his work, he has explored the development of a distinct intervallic lexicon which is both mutable and structurally coherent.
He has released three records for trio since 2023: Implicatures (Astral Spirits, with Chris Lightcap and Tom Rainey), and two with his long-standing group with Henry Fraser and Jason Nazary (Plays Quarter Notes and Other Notes, and Of Peeling Passage: Live at Sisters). Weinberg has also focused heavily on solo work in the last several years, which has resulted in the albums Academy, My Druthers, Live at the Oche, with another forthcoming in 2025.
In various constellations has recently performed with Thomas Buckner, Kieran Daly, Kevin Sun, Nate Wooley, Eivind Opsvik, Kayvon Gordon, Erica Dicker, Sara Schoenbeck, Weasel Walter, Brandon Seabrook, Michael Vatcher, and many others.
Theodora Laird is a vocalist and multidisciplinary artist. Releases under her solo project ‘feeo’ have received critical acclaim. Theodora's practice has involved in tandem with an interest in situating narratives within freely improvised music, specifically through frequent involvement in the GRAIN residency.
'GAX is the duo of Seymour Wright (alto saxophone) and Vasco Alves (gaita de fole) and ‘as tradiçōes/the traditions’ is their first published recording. They started playing together in 2008 as regular participants in Eddie Prévost’s weekly, London workshop.
Seymour Wright is known for his solo work, the duos XT with Paul Abbott, @xcrxswx with Crystabel Efemena Riley, and GUO with Daniel Blumberg, as well as his part in larger groups including أحمد [Ahmed] and X-Ray Hex Tet. Vasco Alves has previously released a solo record with gaita de fole and electronics ‘Gaita Contra Computador’ on After Action Review. ‘Estrada Longa’ for synths and voice was released on Cafe OTO’s TakuRoku, and reissued by Feedback Moves in 2024. He currently leads the exploratory bagpipe ensemble As Rochas da Ajuda. As well as GAX, his other ongoing collaborations include OndaXoque (with Pedro Rufino), a duo with Margarida Garcia. He has also performed extensively as a part of VA AA LR with Adam Asnan & Louie Rice.
