Dub Revolution book launch, panel discussion and live dub experience! – w/ Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound) + Ras Digby (Sir Jessus) + David Katz (Dub Me Always)

£16 £14 Advance £8 MEMBERS

To celebrate the launch of David Katz's Dub Revolution: Jamaica's Sonic Innovators and the Birth of Remix Culture, Cafe Oto is proud to present a night tracing dub's evolution from its origins in the Kingston ghettos during the early 1970s to new mutations in Britain and beyond. Beginning with a panel discussion on all things dub featuring Katz, Ras Digby of Sir Jessus sound system and Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound, we will later be treated to a live dub experience mixed in real time by Adrian Sherwood from his vast sonic archives and a supporting DJ set by Ras Digby, featuring rare vintage dubs of the 1970s and 80s and exclusive one-off dub plates from reggae's most treasured era.

Adrian Sherwood

Adrian Sherwood mixed his first dub album, Creation Rebel’s Dub From Creation, when he was only nineteen. He formed On-U Sound shortly thereafter as a dub-driven independent unafraid of taking risks and he has since produced countless dub odysseys with the likes of Prince Far I, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Flabba Holt and Style Scott of the Roots Radics and Primal Scream, among many others. Renowned for his ability to dub both reggae and non-reggae content with equal zest and originality, we are in for a rare treat since Adrian will be bringing his own mixing desk to Café Oto, using it and various unknown treatments to dub his voluminous archives to oblivion.

Ras Digby

Active on sound systems for over 50 years, Ras Digby helped make Sir Jessus one of the most outstanding British sound systems of the 1970s, their links with the Morwells, Joe Gibbs' Studio, Manzie Swaby, Bob Marley, and Ruddy Thomas and Ossie Hibbert at Channel One yielding an unbeatable supply of exclusive dub plates; the Sir Jessus record label also issued classics by The Morwells and Junior Byles, among others. An amiable selector and toaster who plays with enthusiastic verve, Digby has toured throughout Europe, Brazil and Japan, the nature of his deep sound archive and the trove of exclusive dub plates keeping him in perpetually high command; he has also recorded original work for the late BB Seaton and other contemporary producers. Tonight Digby will help us to better understand dub’s evolution by digging deep into his well of original dub material and the one-off dub plates by which he made his name.

David Katz

The author of People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae, David Katz has been working on Dub Revolution for the last five years, drawing on over 40 years of research; for the last 22 years, he has also run a monthly original reggae vinyl night in Brixton called Dub Me Always, which makes space for veteran sound system selectors. Most of Dub Revolution is drawn from eyewitness accounts gleaned through the first-hand testimony of its progenitors, giving Dub Revolution unique scope. At tonight's event, Katz will help us to better understand dub's origins, its complex evolution, and where it may be headed in the future.
