AN EXPERIMENT ON A BIRD IN THE AIR PUMP

An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump return to the stage with renewed power and urgency, and the same uncompromising spirit that made them one of London’s most fearless underground bands.

Formed in 2008 and named after the Joseph Wright of Derby painting, the band broke boundaries from the start — with no designated front person, drummer or bassist, and an instinctive approach to switching roles mid-performance.

Each member’s voice and instrument carries equal weight, creating a sound that is communal, raw and rhythmically hypnotic.

Composed of British-Filipino twin sisters C-Bird and X-Bird, and D-Bird, who is of British Nepalese–Indian descent, the band channel no wave, punk, soul and grunge into a stripped-back fusion of bass guitars, drums and vocals that evokes both ritual and rebellion.

An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump have previously collaborated with Steve Albini on an unreleased album, and recorded EPs with Steve Mackey (Pulp) and Tim Burgess (The Charlatans).

This Cafe OTO show marks their first headline set since 2010.

'In times when everything seems sewn up, we need someone to tear it apart. In an age of smoothly sellable corporate indie, we need someone to take a knife to the facade... the band stepping up to that challenge are An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump.' The Independent

'The Jesus and Mary Chain meet Kim Gordon in a post-apocalyptic world. Watch them through your fingers.' The Guardian

C.A.R.

C.A.R. is Chloé Raunet — the Canadian-born, London-based producer, songwriter and vocalist — formerly of Battant released on Ivan Smagghe and Chloé’s seminal Kill The DJ records ( named after a night Paris’ famed lesbian run club Le Pulp). Battant were famously discovered by Andrew Weatherall.

C.A.R.’s new record Dance at Oscar’s marks a creative rebirth for Chloé with a new label - Houghton festival founder Craig’s Richards independent label The Nothing Special.

C.A.R. (Choosing Acronyms Randomly) has always defied easy categorisation. But this time, something shifted. After a pandemic-induced pause to focus on her debut documentary (I Am Weekender, BFI / Heavenly Films), Chloé re-emerged with a hunger for change — and with new member Joni, found a kindred force.

Written and refined over a two-year period, Dance at Oscar’s is a bold leap back onto the dancefloor — full of mischief, movement and machine-led emotion. Chloé’s songwriting walks the tightrope between wonk and precision, pop and experimentation. The album was shaped in collaboration with Nathan Ridley at Hermitage Studios, where late-night sessions, playful experimentation, and a shared love of gear (the Roland TR-808 and Lexicon Prime Time delay, chief among them) pushed the sound into bold, vivid new territory.

Highlights include The Pageant, a brooding take on monarchy and moral contradiction; Shyana, a machine-funk deep dive into pop hysteria and Paul Anka; and Gentle Sunsets, a synthetic anthem to the numbing grip of consumer culture. Shade in Me — reworked from a collaboration with Andy Bell (Ride) — retains Andy’s guitar and bass, but now pulses with live drums. On the Line closes in a dream state, nodding to Laurie Anderson with vocodered clarity.

C.A.R. has performed at Berghain, Le Bataclan, Nuits Sonores, and Red Bull Music Festival Moscow. She also hosts On the Slip Road, a monthly NTS Radio show since 2013, which explores her ongoing love affair with genre sprawl and sonic oddities.

Oh Tiny

Oh Tiny examines spatial perception through "sound bodies" built from foley, field recordings, and homemade sculptural instruments.

Her work integrates video collage and moving image as a direct visual extension of the audio.

Driven by a fascination with the collective experience, she uses shared resonance to unite audiences turning listening and observing into a communal act.

Massimo Braghieri, DJ

London-based composer and DJ, Massimo Braghieri is a multifaceted force in the world of music. From his early days as an
organ soloist and conductor to his work as a composer, arranger, and sound engineer, Massimo's musical odyssey has been remarkably dynamic.

His musical education began at four and culminated in a master's degree in Organ and Composition. Initially drawn to performance and education, he spent years as an organ soloist and choirmaster, even conducting his first orchestra in his teens.

However, his passion for electronic music and his insatiable curiosity about all forms of music led him down many different paths. He became involved in several local avant-garde bands, some of which achieved cult status in the Italian New Wave underground scene. He studied and performed as a countertenor in the award-winning madrigal group Fosco Corti.

He composed scores for theatrical companies and arranged and wrote music for the folk group Enerbia, whose debut album was released in collaboration with World Music magazine. He also toured as a keyboardist with Manuela Dia, winner of the Premio Tenco—Italy's most prestigious award for songwriters—broadcast nationally on television.

In 2008, Massimo's evolution as a DJ took flight, especially within the LGBT+ and queer scene. His signature blend of indie-dance and techno captivated audiences and became a staple at legendary London venues, earning acclaim across Europe, Canada, and Asia.

Most recently, he composed the soundtrack for “Temple”, a short film selected for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Expanding on his electronic roots, Massimo also teamed up with DJ/producer Gianluca Pighi to form the project Oh!. Grounded in the atmospheric textures of synth-pop and post-punk, the duo released their ambitious, 16-track debut double album, We Come In Peace, on Huldigung Records in 2026.
