Quartet for the end of year : John Butcher, Veryan Weston, Hannah Marshall & Fabrizio Spera

No Longer Available
Although this particular ensemble of four players has never played as a quartet, there are strong connections within the group. John has worked in Italy with Fabrizio, Veryan has numerous projects with Hannah, John works Veryan in the Phil Minton Quartet etc….the evening will also see smaller combinations of the four musicians. A very fitting end to the year.

John Butcher:

“…..John Butcher throws even more reeds away unplayed than most saxophonists, because he needs them to do things most players don't. He's a past master at 'keeping the nose down' when you are sure he will do the opposite….” (Steve Beresford – EMANEM SLEEVENOTES)

Veryan Weston:

“…..Weston's arsenal speaks to years of interactive listening. Weston veers convincingly between post-Bergian arpeggiated sequences and obsessive Monk-like hammerings, fully examining each ramification of each minute sonic block before discarding it and moving effortlessly on to fresher, deeper-down things…..” (Marc Medwin – ONE FINAL NOTE 2005)

Hannah Marshall:

“…..Marshall is amazingly resourceful, gntty and bustling where necessary but elsewhere keening, weeping……” Jason Bivins - SIGNAL TO NOISE 2008

Fabrizio Spera: founding member of the free improvising group Ossatura. He has played in concert and festivals internationally with, among others: Peter Kowald, Wadada Leo Smith, Butch Morris, Rova, Tim Hodgkinson, Thomas Lehn, Tristan Honsinger, Jack Wright, Some of his current groups include a quartet with John Butcher, John Edwards and Alberto Braida, a trio with Mike Cooper and Leila Adu, a trio with Lisle Ellis and A. Braida.

From 1999 untill 2008 He has been directly involved in the organization of the now deceased Controindicazioni Festival, one of the few italian festivals historically devoted to improvised music.
