Now in its third year and fast gaining a reputation for its innovative and intriguing annual line up, Jazz and Experimental Music from Poland (JEMP) returns to delight London audiences with six days of exploratory jazz and contemporary music from some of Poland’s finest musicians. At OTO Project Space, composer and musician Piotr Kurek will join London’s Andie Brown for another cross-border collaborative project commissioned by the festival. Drawing the crowd into a bewitching world of psychedelia, woozy soundscapes and subcutaneous tensions, Piętnastka will then use drums (Hubert Zemler), organ and synthesiser (Piotr Kurek) to create minimalistic, but at times frenetic, instrumental narratives.

PIĘTNASTKA

Piotr Kurek – organs and electronics
Hubert Zemler – drums and percussion

An instrumental project by Piotr Kurek “borne of love for things old and mysterious", Piętnastka is one of the most interesting enterprises to emerge from the Polish tape revival movement. The project’s debut album Dalia, released in 2011 as a cassette, explores psychedelic, woozy soundscapes and subcutaneous tensions crawling under layers of nostalgic, fairytale-like haze. Their music has also been described by Decoder Magazine as “a sprawling and epic synthesis of experimental composition with the traditional melodies of eastern Europe.”

Piętnastka in its live incarnation features Piotr Kurek on amplified organs + electronics and Hubert Zemler on drums + percussion. Together, they will be performing songs from Dalia as well as a series of improvisations around material from Piętnastka’s new album, due to be released later this year on Sangoplasmo Records.

“Once in a while, a release comes along that is so different, so hard to catergorize that it’s just mindblowing.” - Weed Temple

PIOTR KUREK + ANDIE BROWN

Piotr Kurek – organs and electronics
Andie Brown – electronics

Piotr Kurek will join London’s Andie Brown for collaborative project commissioned by the festival.

Andie Brown is a musician from London who began playing bass guitar at the age of 13. Her unorthodox style and desire to experiment with sound led her to working with the band Cindytalk in her late teens. In 2007 Andie began working under the name These Feathers Have Plumes, working with traditional and non-traditional instrumentation and field recordings to build multi layered soundscapes. Her debut release soon came through New York label Period Tapes and in 2010 followed this with the full-length release of Corvidae on Tartaruga.

Currently working with glass, her live performances have become increasingly atmospheric and immersive, incorporating field recordings, found sound and spoken word dialogue. Andie also collaborates frequently with other musicians and has taken her shows throughout the UK and mainland Europe.
