KAFKA FRAGMENTS
KAFKA FRAGMENTS (György Kurtág): Shie Shoji, mezzo-soprano / Aisha Orazbayeva, violin
SCARS: a new opera by Kate Whitley, presented by Carmen Elektra Opera Collective
+ NEW CHAMBER WORKS based on texts by survivors of torture and organised violence
+ GABRIEL PROKOFIEV DJ sets
The night features selections from György Kurtág's masterpiece Kafka Fragments for soprano and violin, based on extracts from the author's diaries, as well as six new works by some of the UK's best emerging composers.
The new pieces have been commissioned specially for the event, setting and responding to texts written by torture survivors from Freedom from Torture's creative writing group Write to Life.
Composers include: Kate Whitley, Thom Andrewes, Jude Carlton, William Marsey, Laurence Osborn and Gregor Riddell.
In between sets, Nonclassical resident DJ Gabriel Prokofiev will as usual be crisscrossing the worlds of modernist and experimental music, with nods to glitch, hip hop, ambient music and beyond.
Nonclassical is a record label and club night based in East London, promoting contemporary classical music. Its live series has been described by Time Out as "one of London's bravest, most creative nights out", with performances of avant garde chamber music alongside innovative DJ sets from Gabriel Prokofiev and others.
