Powered by musician DIY, Match&Fuse are igniting progressive music with pan-European festivals, this year in Warsaw, Toulouse and London. Cafe Oto will host a night of the 4th annual London festival with an extra-ordinary line up of composers and bands who compel and challenge. Dissolving barriers between genres and countries, it's a rare chance to hear a spectrum of sounds from the European and UK underground.
The night features an exclusive commission from Leafcutter John (of Polar Bear) and vocal adventurist, Isabel Sörling. Currently developing his own drum machine, John stands as a sharp, creative thinker translating ideas into sound-crafts. His performances are sprinkled with the magical and hint at a myriad of imagery, poetry and thought as well as deep groove. Considered one of the open-minded artists reinvigorating Nordic jazz, Isabel Sörling uses her voice and processed vocals to explore texture and music as well as lyrical feeling.
For the commission John will be using the light controlled interface he imagined to conjur electronic-scapes and patterns in combination with Isabel's processed vocals and singing. Expect warped re-mixing, far-reaching intent and moments of sublime interplay both in written and free form...it could go anywhere.
Alexander Hawkins performs a solo set that has been gathering critical acclaim with his exquisite blend of piano styles as shown in his solo album, Song Singular. Coming from an alternate angle are The Jist, a guitar, electronics and vocal duo from Norway who will be playing in London for the first time. Their improvised sonics and sense of drama create stories of sound and are establishing them as a unique and relevant band. They will collaborate with saxophonist Rachel Musson, an improviser who is also building a reputation through a variety of projects in the UK.
The music will be captured in real time paintings by artist, Gina Southgate.
Match&Fuse also present two artists in the Cafe Oto Project Space. The cellist and vocalist Laura Moody inhabits a space between classical, experimental and the singer/songwriter tradition. Elegant, atmospheric and mesmerising she has been garnering attention through tours with Björk. In a similar vein are How Town, a quartet who met in Amsterdam but hail from Belgium and Latvia as well. This acoustic, post-pop band use vocals, guitar and double bass to weave original musical ideas.
This is part of a wristband event which allows entry to performances at Cafe OTO, the OTO Project Space, the Vortex and Servant Jazz Quarters. There will be a procession from each venue ending in a 'supergroup' of all the bands aka the Eirik Tofte Match&Fuse Orchestra, playing in Gillett Square and finishing at midnight.
