Tonight at Cafe OTO, voice, text, food and fire come together for the launch of Zara Joan Miller’s new poetry book Year of the Dragon, published by TACO! This event is free for OTO members.

Written across the Year of the Dragon, Miller’s long poem traces fire through the experience of becoming a mother, moving through rage and tenderness, home, faith and survival. For the launch, Zara Joan Miller, Theodora Laird and Phoenix Yemi perform a new work for three voices, with Thea Jeffery Sands responding to the text through food: prepared, performed and swallowed.

Theodora Laird is a vocalist and multidisciplinary artist whose work moves between song, narrative and freely improvised music. Phoenix Yemi is a Nigerian-British poet, artist and curator working across desire, dissent, the body and the earth. Together with Miller, the trio bring the book into a live, collective form.

Anastasia Freygang also performs a solo set, bringing her aria-like compositions into the evening, with a performance language that sits somewhere between song, theatricality and abrasion. Mo Dafa plays music of the Dragon.

Food will be served from 8pm and available throughout the evening, with a special menu by Thea available separately on the night.
