HEXA

Hexa are an exuberant eight-piece from Manhattan whose music is rooted in doo-wop, girl groups, experimentalism and NY punk. Schizophrenically they lurch from haunting piano and voice pieces drenched in avant-garde, cinematic texture, to pheremonal Shangri Las-style garage-band punk and disco, laced with irrational lyrical juxtaposition and sybaritic allusion. Switching between male and female vocal leads on different songs, they maintain a wide-eyed, tripped-out romanticism throughout. Touring the UK to promote their current EP "New Songs", the band make a rare, stripped-down acoustic appearance at Cafe Oto, showcasing a more intimate set of their outstanding songs. Eccentric, irrepressible and utterly seductive.

BENJAMIN BRUNEL

Benjamin Brunel makes sophisticated Baroque pop that casts a wry eye over contemporary trash culture in a manner that paradoxically recalls both Ray Davis and Rufus Wainwright. His highly-evolved, jaunty arrangements effortlessly underpin a wicked humour that roundly mocks celebrity culture, artistic pretension and self-importance.

Brunel has recently completed a seven-song musical-memoir "Famous For Being Famous", a witty, caustic set that puts him up there with any young composer/performer working in the UK today.

For this solo outing at Cafe Oto, Brunel takes his place at the grand piano to deliver an exemplary exposition in the fine art of the contemporary singer/songwriter. A Cole Porter for the Myspace generation.
