Nino Gvilia, the heteronym of giulia deval, brings her dreamy, slightly odd, and timeless folk repertoire to the stage with an intimate live set featuring harmonium, guitar, and tape recorders.
The concert will open with a tribute to Ed Askew, the cult figure of American psychedelic folk who passed away in early 2025. For the occasion, Nino Gvilia has reimagined Ask the Unicorn, a song written by Askew in 1968, turning it into a raw and haunting cry of voice and harmonium.
Using voice, guitar and other sounds, Mary explores the subtle and sometimes surreal territory between folk song and art song. Drawing on her background in chamber writing and her deep love for the freer, more haptic spirit of traditional field recordings, she sets old and new songs to work alongside each other, so she can play with certain dynamic tensions that are perpetually at work in the world: the past and the present, the natural and the civilized, the extraordinary and the familiar, the symbolic and the real...
