Sculpture is the duo of Dan Hayhurst (music), and Reuben Sutherland (animation). Their performances are an amalgam of electronic music, kinetic art, comic strips, abstract animation, audiovisual cut-ups – a mix of analog and digital practices – tape manipulation, samples, found sounds, aleatoric and algorithmic programming and live improvisation.
Sculpture combines unstable electronic music, animation and video art in transitory audiovisual forms. During a live AV set by Sculpture, genre tropes, temporal signs and perceptual associations are reconfigured in the moment, seeking multisensory overload. A volatile simultaneity links the duo’s visual turntablism and metamorphic sound. With a camera mounted on a Technics turntable and a chaotic library of zoetropic prints, visual artist Reuben Sutherland combines animation, tactile photo collage, and cutting-edge digital technique in hyperkinetic patterns and op-art cuts. On sonics, musician Dan Hayhurst misuses samplers, tape loops, cassette players and CDJ decks to create an analogue/digital hybrid of outsider pop, experimental composition and improvised splatter.
Sculpture formed as a duo for an unrehearsed performance in 2008. They have since played worldwide and released polymedia byproducts on labels including
