"A beautiful and nuanced composition, making art from unexpected places, creating a kaleidoscopic portrait of the world. The delicacy and charm with which Iain Chambers sequences his materials is really something to admire. The machines live, breathe, and talk to each other – and to us. Yet there’s also something faintly valedictory about the tone, as if reminding us this is probably the last we’ll hear of these old-fashioned devices built on Newtonian principles" - THE SOUND PROJECTOR
The Eccentric Press comprises two pieces composed entirely from recordings by Sounds of Changes – a pan-EU project documenting the endangered sounds of industry and domesticity. A collaboration between six major European museums, its recordings are freely available to download and use.
These two symphonies of industrial sound were commissioned by WDR Cologne and ABC Radio National Australia. The source material is recognisable throughout, even when manipulated, juxtaposed or overlaid. Musical relationships emerge from sounds more often regarded as noise.
