Unpredictable Series presents Sculpture and The Light Surgeons
An Evening of Audiovisual Performance & Live Cinema
We welcome two landmark acts in the world of live audiovisual performance – artists for whom the screen is never passive and sound is never mere accompaniment.
Sculpture — the duo of Reuben Sutherland and Dan Hayhurst — conjures volatile, hyperkinetic worlds from turntables, zoetropic prints, cassette decks and samplers. Their live AV sets resist category: animation bleeds into collage, outsider pop splinters into improvised noise, and genre tropes dissolve the moment they form. Expect multisensory overload.
The Light Surgeons present Adrift — a live cinema performance decades in the making. Drawing on a 2006 installation, filmmaker Christopher Thomas Allen and composer Tim Cowie weave analogue slide photography, archival video and a live electro-acoustic score into a meditation on liminal landscapes, migration and the changing face of our world. Tonight's performance will also feature new material from Landsong, an ongoing exploration of aerial footage and sonification gathered across the UK.
Two very different works. One shared impulse: to make images and sound inseparable.
Sculpture combines unstable electronic music, animation and video art in transitory audiovisual forms. During a live AV set by Sculpture, genre tropes, temporal signs and perceptual associations are reconfigured in the moment, seeking multisensory overload. A volatile simultaneity links the duo’s visual turntablism and metamorphic sound. With a camera mounted on a Technics turntable and a chaotic library of zoetropic prints, visual artist Reuben Sutherland combines animation, tactile photo collage, and cutting-edge digital technique in hyperkinetic patterns and op-art cuts. On sonics, musician Dan Hayhurst misuses samplers, tape loops, cassette players and CDJ decks to create an analogue/digital hybrid of outsider pop, experimental composition and improvised splatter.
Sculpture formed as a duo for an unrehearsed performance in 2008. They have since played worldwide and released polymedia byproducts on labels including
