MASSAR EGBARI

“If we make a song about elections, it's not that we support any of the parties, but rather to encourage people to participate in the political process -- allowing people to express what they see and whatever they want. But we won't influence their opinion.” Ahmed Hafez

UNESCO prize winners of the prize for "Artist for Intercultural Dialog between the Arab and Western Worlds", Massar Egbari make their debut London performance at Cafe Oto. This is contemporary Egyptian song writing, reflecting the troubled times Egypt is passing through, with a hope of bright futures. The bands name roughly translates as Compulsory Path, lyrically exploring on themes and ideas that arise as these paths are challenged.

As active participants in the Egyptian revolution, experiencing the turmoil daily, their music reflects and embodies the dreams and ideas of hope and the want to inspire people to consider their role in their own futures. Drawing on both western and oriental Egyptian traditions, Massar Egbari are one of the leading lights in contemporary Egyptian song craft.

WILL NEWSOME

Charismatic boat restorer and Bristol ferryman Will Newsome is one of the great up and coming names in English folk song. His instrument is however, somewhat unexpected; the West African Kora. This is joyous music, both intimate and ecstatic. Where as some Kora playing is reminiscent of later blues music, Newsome's take shows more reminiscent of the Celtic harp, but still with a sense of West African rhythm underpinning. This is complemented by Newsome's simple, yet intense vocal delivery. Also for the first time - this performance will also feature performances with Daniel Merrill (one third of the Dead Rat Orchestra).
