Sunday School x Cafe OTO presents: CONTAINER / WILL GUTHRIE (DUO) + NICK KLEIN / AUDREY CHEN (DUO) + DJ HESAITIX

£20 £17 Advance £13 MEMBERS

Sunday School makes its Cafe OTO debut with an evening showcasing two exciting new collaborations, both following recent releases, bringing together artists whose individual practices have long occupied the outer edges of experimental music.

Container, the long-running electronic project of Ren Schofield, and Australian percussionist Will Guthrie present their rhythmically explosive new duo, combining Schofield's raw, angular electronics with Guthrie's propulsive percussion. Also performing are Nick Klein and Audrey Chen, whose improvisational collaboration explores the shifting interplay between voice and electronics, moving fluidly between distinction and symbiosis while pushing towards extremes of dynamics and affect.

Throughout the evening, DJ Hesaitix (fka M.E.S.H) offers a rare glimpse into the more abstract and adventurous corners of his musical world. His selections move fluidly between the club and the outer edges of experimental music, leaving room for deviation and open-ended exploration.

Container

Container is the long running electronic solo project of American-born London-based musician Ren Schofield. Combining his background in noise-rock and tape music with techno and rhythmic electronics, his sound is characterised by propulsive beats and liberal doses of distortion. Container has always danced the absurd space between serious and stupid, and on his latest release, ‘Yacker’ (2024), all elements are turned up to eleven as he delivers a pristine field guide to furious frenzied fun. Citing his inspiration on ‘Yacker' as the Nirvana song ‘Oh, The Guilt’, the Mindflayer album ‘It’s Always 1999’, and the Rah Bras song ‘Sooop Toe Pump Girls’, Schofield strikes an even balance between heavy, relentless, joyful, silly, and sloppy.

His music has been released on labels such as Black Truffle, Editions Mego, Erstwhile, Clean Feed, Gaffer Records, Hasana Editions, 23five, iDEAL and his own label Antboy Music.

Nick Klein

Nick Klein is an artist working in sound and art and sometimes (begrudgingly) sound art with a lean towards the social potential in those modalities as they interact. Klein has recorded a large amount of music for tape, CD, digital file, and vinyl editions for music labels around the world, as well as running his own amorphous label project PL (primitive languages, Psychic Liberation, etc). Concurrently, to the best of his ability, he has shown work in visual art contexts. Klein is uninterested in the prohibitive ideological tropes and circumstances that both contexts offer, and focuses the intent of his work on trying to see what productive energy comes from the friction between the two. Klein likes loud volume, cooking, offline community building, records, bars, synthesizers, and comedy.

Klein is currently located in Berlin. Klein has operated a monthly radio show on Montez Press Radio since its inception and is spending 2023-2024 developing a monthly invitational program at the Volksbühne Roter Salon. Klein has collaborated in various capacities and medial materializations with Wilted Woman, Audrey Chen, Das Ding, Hugo Esquinca, Jean-Louis Huhta, Erik Nystrand, Scant, Philip Maier, Makoto Oshiro and many more.

Klein has performed and shown works in contexts and festivals like The Amant Foundation (USA), SARA’S (USA), MOMA PS1 (USA), De La Cruz Collection (USA), Volksbühne (DE), Empty Gallery (HK), Berghain (DE), Tresor (DE), Seendosi (SK), Cafe Sismo (CDMX), Cafe Oto (UK), Folkteatern (SE), Burning Fleshtival (USA), Herrensauna (DE), and Summer Scum (USA).

Audrey Chen

AUDREY CHEN is a second-generation Taiwanese American artist based in Berlin. Her work explores migration, memory and the transmission of untold histories through voice and the body. Using extreme vocal techniques and the Ciat-Lonbarde “Fourses” synthesizer, she creates visceral performances where body, space and sound merge in a feedback loop of resonance and imagination. For over two decades, she has toured internationally, performing solo and in long-term collaborations including duos with Phil Minton, Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø (as BEAM SPLITTER), Lukas Koenig and Julien Desprez (as MOPCUT), Kaffe Matthews, Nick Klein and Hugo Esquinca. Her work has been presented at festivals and venues such as Maerzmusik, CTM, Unsound, Wien Modern, Berghain, Zacheta National Gallery and the Watermill Center. The Wire describes her practice as “uncompromising and idiosyncratic… tightly disciplined yet acoustically wild,” exposing the raw physicality of voice and utterance.
