Ace line-up from Amerstam-originating, Paris-based label South of North, featuring Magic Pony Productions, Elizabeth Davis, and Kim David Bots & Lyckle De Jong.
Initially driven by improvisation, Magic Pony Productions occupies a space between structure and chance, where gimbri, drums, guitar, keyboards, voices, loops and digital effects converge towards various possible genres. Roles shift, instruments circulate, eventually developing a shared, unstable language.
“I have another gift for you, a Magic Pony, don’t make fun, this is very very small, and has a saddle and very long ears, ride it if you wish, though never part from the magic pony, not in this world or the next, it will be your friend, your best friend”
Elizabeth Davis is a musician, writer, and audio engineer whose work uses the interplay of technological limitation, algorithmic processes, and human expression/intervention as subject matter. Her music—under her own name or prior alias Wilted Woman—has been released by labels such as Alien Jams, Psychic Liberation, Phantasy, and Superpang. She has presented her work at Sonic Acts (Amsterdam); MaerzMusik, 3HD Festival, and Transmediale (Berlin); Cafe Oto (London); ZKM (Karlsruhe); Fylkingen (Stockholm); and Triennale (Milano) amongst many other venues, festivals and art spaces across Europe and North America. Davis was born in the United States and lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
In 2017 Kim David Bots and Lyckle de Jong met in the water-basin of one of the earliest concrete structures in the Netherlands, a bunker that was part of Amsterdam’s defensive line, built around the 1890’s. Something that used to house water was now empty. For three days they recorded improvised music that is still on a hard drive somewhere. Since then they have performed and recorded together, with a bunch of releases still to come. Recently the 7 inch split mini album ‘Land of the Few and Far Between / Songs for St. Michel’ was released by Amsterdam/Paris based label South of North which adds to a growing collection of recordings for environments that are somehow sticky. Kim David Bots and Lyckle de Jong perform intricate musical figures, using clarinet, kawai k1, ukelele and an assortment of other material, making chains of brief and somewhat improvised mini compositions inspired by browsing (digital and otherwise).
