Friday 4 October 2013, 8pm
Great showcase for eclectic Ghent-based label Smeraldina-Rima. Combining an esoteric and free-thinking musical outlook with a passionately DIY approach that sees them designing and printing much of their output in their own in-house screen printing shop and graphic design studio, Smeraldina-Rima have ben putting out fantastic releases since 2007 by the likes of Nate Wooley, Peeesseye, Talibam! and Jozef Van Wissem as well as the four artists on tonight's bill.
Sheldon Siegel are a Belgian improvisation/free/non-music ensemble who mainly operate as a trio but have played with guests such as Roscoe Mitchell, John Butcher and Audrey Lauro. Reed player Joachim Badenhorst has been active on the European and American creative jazz-scene for a decade. British musician and producer Alex Monk draws on influences from the 60's and 70's acid folk movement combined with a curiosity to experiment with ambient and electronics. And Jack Allett draws on array of Takoma / John Fahey / fingerpicking references and transposes them into something refreshingly unique.
This evening will also be the launch night for 'Throw Down Your Hammer And Sing / Sheldon Siegel' split LP and Alex Monk's 'Indiscreet Mirror' LP.
SHELDON SIEGEL (BE)
Sheldon Siegel is the Belgian improvisation/free/non-music ensemble of Gino Coomans, Gerard Herman and Erik Heestermans — founded in 2007 and wrapping silence with sparseness in harmony ever since. Over the years, they found themselves maintaining a non-rehearsal policy upon silent agreement, turning their live sets into an ever new meeting point — a diagnostics of personal musical and instrumental interests, with equal opportunities for hits and misses. They have released a few CDRs on Reeshønd, a split LP with the Brussels based band Razen on Kraak, the double LP “Grève Totale” as the result of their residency at Scheld'apen (Antwerp), and recently a C80 tape called “Three Euro Breakfast” on House Of Alchemy, with recordings from their 2010 European tour with U.S. Girls and Ignatz. Sheldon Siegel operates mainly as a trio, but has played with guests such as Roscoe Mitchell, John Butcher, Audrey Lauro, Cam Deas & Cassis Cornuta.
This 4th October they are celebrating the release of a split LP with Throw Down Your Hammer And Sing (Nate Wooley / Jason Roebke / Fred Lonberg-Holm). The LP is a joint release of Smeraldina-Rima and Croxhapox.

"what makes this a record worth getting to know is his unflappable integration of a half-century of jazz and improvised music, from Jimmy Giuffre right up through John Butcher and Joe McPhee" Bill Mayer, Still Single (on 'The Jungle He Told Me')
