Sachiko M + Eddie Prévost + Angharad Davies / Johan Arrias / Lisa Ullén

No Longer Available

Sachiko M makes a long-awaited return to OTO following two stunning residencies here with Otomo Yoshihide in 2010. Working with a stark sonic palette that consists entirely of sine waves, Sachiko M's radical stance consistently draws interest and provokes debate. Since 1998 she's been active on an irregular basis in a number of projects, including the experimental electronic music duo Filament with Otomo Yoshihide, the electronics trio I.S.O., a duo with Toshimaru Nakamura, and the duo Cosmos with Ami Yoshida.

Also on the bill is Eddie Prévost - founder of the essential AMM, and collaborator of the greatest improvisers internationally since the 60's - and a trio of violinist Angharad Davies, saxophone and clarinet player Johan Arrias, and pianist Lisa Ullén

SACHIKO M

Sachiko M has been active as a sampler player since 1994. Early in her career she was involved in the cut-up and "plunderphonic" (or "plagiaristic") sampling movements. In '98, in a drastic departure from those approaches, she originated the revolutionary method she uses to this day--manipulating the sampler's internal test tones. With the 2000 release of Sine Wave Solo, her extreme solo recording consisting entirely of sine waves, Sachiko M suddenly became the focus of intense interest on the international scene, including European music festivals and Britain's Wire magazine. Since then she's been active on an irregular basis in a number of projects--including the experimental electronic music duo Filament, the electronics trio I.S.O., a duo with Toshimaru Nakamura, and the duo Cosmos with Ami Yoshida--in addition to collaborating with various musicians from other countries.

EDDIE PRÉVOST

Eddie Prévost plays with immense fire, grace and invention. Founder of the essential AMM, collaborator of the greatest improvisers internationally, since the 60's he has kept a continuous contact with the scene and always manages to invent anew his contribution to "meta-music".

“Prévost's free drumming flows superbly making use of his formidable technique. It’s as though there has never been an Elvin Jones or Max Roach.” - Melody Maker

ANGHARAD DAVIES

Angharad Davies is a violinist whose work is situated in the complex intersection of improvised and composed music. She is dedicated to exploring and expanding sound production on the violin, and has developed a specific approach to the violin, which extends the sound possibilities of the instrument by attaching and applying objects to the strings or by sounding unexpected parts of the instrument's body.

Davies is an active performer in contemporary, improvisation and experimental music both as a soloist, within ensembles such as Apartment House and Common Objects, and in smaller improvised groups with musicians such as Axel Dörner, Taku Unami, and Tisha Mukarji.

Her sensitivity to the sonic possibilities of musical situations and attentiveness to their shape and direction make her one of contemporary music's most fascinating figures.

JOHAN ARRIAS

Born in 1976, saxophone and clarinet player Johan Arrias works with deconstructing and fragmenting the traditional play on his instruments with so called ‘extended techniques’ and moves freely between improvised music and notated music. He is also active as a composer. His music is released on labels such as Monotype Records, Jahr Null Aufnahmen, Headspin, Crazy Wizdom. He studied at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, where he received his M.F.A in 2001.

LISA ULLÉN

Lisa Ullén is a pianist/composer, based in Stockholm Sweden. Ullén has been described as a strong voice for the piano experimentation, with a rare sound awareness. She works with unorthodox harmonies on the piano, both with and without preparation.

"Extraordinary is all I can say as I dive in to her unique approach. Ms. Ullen prepares the piano in her own way coaxing a variety of unique sounds, creating new sounds and textures along the way. Each of the thirteen pieces explore a different approach or terrain. Each piece is fascinating for different reasons, some abrupt, some intense and some twisted into odd shapes. "Low Voice I" is dark and ominous and deals with those sounds from the low end of the piano". Ms. Ullen also works hard to create bizarre sounds inside the piano, taking her time to craft strange sounds, one or two at a time, each one selectively chosen. Each piece is like entering a new world to explore and evoke different spirits". - Downtown MUSIC GALLERY
