Bird on the Wire presents Nadja + Chicaloyoh + James Vella + Aidan Baker

No Longer Available

Bird on the Wire presents an evening of densely-layered drone-scaping from Canadian duo Nadja, who draw influences from ambient, metal and sound collage in equal mesaure. Tonight will also feature readings from Nadja's prolific Aidan Baker and James Vella (Yndi Halda) from their publications on Wounded Wolf Press.

NADJA

Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff. Nadja originally began in 2003 as a solo project for Baker to explore the heavier/noisier side of his experimental/ambient guitar-based music. In 2005 Buckareff joined in order to make the project more than just a studio endeavour & allow Nadja to perform live.

Nadja creates music that has been variously described as drone metal, ambient doom, and shoegazer, combining soundscapes, electronics, & atmospheric vocals with snail-crawl, epic riffs & dirge-like percussion, tempering the cacophany with a certain ethereal melodicism such that the listener is enveloped in a sublimating wall of amorphous sound.

Tonight Aidan Baker will also read from his forthcoming book on Wounded Wolf Press - 'Passing Thru' - described as "poetic (re-)interpretations of other artforms—paintings, films, songs—re-envisioning or -displaying the artworks in question through words, exploring the artists' intentions, and the psychological responses of both viewer and creator".

CHICALOYOH

Chicaloyoh is Alice Dourlen’s solo project. Creating music between soundscape exploration and intimate contemplation, Chicaloyoh is a mix of guitar, keyboards and percussions from distant and various horizons. Chicaloyoh is a one woman band that will attract those who like the priestess singings of Inca Ore or Nico. Together with High Wolf she plays as Woodoo Mount Sister, who toured Europe and the USA last summer. Chicaloyoh has already released tapes on Bumtapes, Dial square tapes, Clay Ruby’s (from Burial Hex and Second Family Band) label Brave Mysteries, and more recently, full-length LP's on the french label Faunasabbatha and Shelter Press.

JAMES VELLA

James Vella will read from his new book 'Devourings' - his first collection of short stories. British, of Maltese descent, and having spent substantial time in both territories, Vella’s fascination with travel – and the “dream travels” that real-world wanderings can stir in the imagination – has informed much of his writing.

Of import to Vella is the realism to be found in the otherworldly designs of poetry and magic, and the work of several inspirational writers – from Graham Greene’s Mexican texts to the prose of Gabriel García Márquez and Jorge Luis Borges. Carson McCullers, Paul Bowles and Italo Calvino are all influences, too.

Also a lyricist and accomplished musician, Vella has received critical acclaim for his songs. He lives in Brighton, where he works in the music industry. Vella’s debut novel will follow the release of 'Devourings.'
