form a trio of three duos:
Riley and Wright are @xcrswx - a contrasting of LIVE and the ANDROID
Wright and Kanngiesser are abaria - a play on weightlessness (as in Primo and Italo, Abdul and Julius, bodies and life)
Kanngiesser and Riley - intensive pourings of skins and strings
This is their third trio concert at Cafe Oto, touching and un-touching on all they know.
Ute Kanngiesser has played cello since early childhood, and for more than a decade, has only played unscripted, improvised music - solo and in collaboration with other musicians and composers in London and internationally. An important part of her work has developed in relationship to other art forms such as writing, dance, film, and site specific performance. More recently, she has begun to experiment with open form compositions, writing semi-graphic scores as a way of recording music, that can be retrieved later on and in new ways.
Recent collaborations have been with Evie Ward, Daniel Blumberg, Billy Steiger, Tom Wheatley, Crystabel Riley, Seymour Wright, Paul Abbott, Keira Greene, John Butcher, Eddie Prévost and Jennifer Allum.
During the late naughties Crystabel Riley toured Japan and Europe using drums, electronics and make-up in noise trio Maria and the Mirrors.
This was the start of her interest in patterns on skins - human and drum.
This interest in dimensional patterns existing on (and off) different surfaces has continued to evolve through exploring the idea of 'care and uncare' of the skin, self, others, and the world, across all of Crystabel's practices as an Artist (Make-up, Drum).
Crystabel has been a long term collaborator with Sue Lynch who welcomed her into the Horse Improvised Music Club, where she collaborated with Caroline Krabel, John Edwards, and Steve Beresford who welcomed her into the London Improvisers Orchestra.
She is currently working on the multi-format duo project @xcrswx with Seymour Wright.
Seymour Wright’s work is about the creative, situated friction of learning, ideas, people and the saxophone – music, history and technique – actual and potential.
His solo work is documented on three widely-acclaimed collections - Seymour Wright of Derby (2008), Seymour Writes Back (2015) and Is This Right? (2017).
Current projects include: abaria with Ute Kanngiesser; [Ahmed] with Antonin Gerbal, Joel Grip and Pat Thomas; @xcrswx with Crystabel Riley; GUO with Daniel Blumberg; The Experimental Library with Evie Ward; XT with Paul Abbott; a trans-atlantic duet with Anne Guthrie, and, with Jean-luc Guionnet a project addressing an imaginary lacunae in Aby Warburg's Atlas Mnemosyne.
His writing has been published in C//A, Sound American and The Wire.
