John Tilbury JOHN WALL / John Edwards / Mark Sanders
No Longer Available
John Tilbury has been stranded due to the crazy weather hitting the UK right now so is no longer able to make this gig. Instead we've opted for a solo each from Mark Sanders and John Edwards and then a trio with John Wall. A different, but equally enticing proposition!John Tilbury returns in a trio with John Edwards and Mark Sanders, a group which exceeded all expectations when they performed here last June, their first, and so far only, encounter. Tilbury unleashed bird calls, tape manipulations, and dense keyboard attack; Edwards lurched from abstract drone to full on walking bass figures; and Sanders propelled the group with a unique mixture of delicate percussive touches and unrestrained drum barrage. It wasn't a case of Tilbury suddenly switching into free jazz mode, or Edwards and Sanders moving into AMM-style experimentalism. All three maintained their own distinctive voices, their musical individuality if anything enhanced by a situation entirely free of compromise or reverence but full of mutual awareness and sustained creative energy. Their second encounter gives them the opportunity to explore the many as yet untouched areas opened up in their first performance and promises to be an utterly mesmerising event.
NB: Please note that the 'John Tilbury plays.. John White and Alexander Scriabin' event originally scheduled for this date has been moved back to Monday 24 March to allow for extra rehearsal time.
JOHN TILBURY
British pianist John Tilbury is renowned for his remarkable touch and in constant demand as an interpreter of piano pieces by composers such as Morton Feldman and John Cage. During the 1960s, Tibury was closely associated with the composer Cornelius Cardew, whose music he has interpreted and recorded and a member of the Scratch Orchestra. He is also an incredible improvisor, most famously as a member of legendary British group AMM.
JOHN EDWARDS
John Edwards' staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others. Equally at home with fragile acoustic improvisation or driving free jazz, Edwards is quite deservedly one of the most in demand players of today, and has propelled encounters with Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Matthew Shipp, and many more.
MARK SANDERS
Mark Sanders has been acclaimed as “the most exciting, original and overwhelmingly powerful drummer alive”(Steve Reynolds, Jazz Corner) and his precise and propulsive drumming has graced projects with, to name but a few, Evan Parker, Axel Dörner, Agusti Fernandez, John Butcher, Roswell Rudd, and Otomo Yoshihde.
"ubiquitous, diverse and constantly creative, drummer Mark Sanders always outdoes himself, whether playing with restraint or erupting like a dynamo." Bruce L Gallenter, Downtown Music Gallery. NY
"a gifted player capable of seamless movement between free-rhythms and propulsive swing" John Fordham. The Guardian
