IO#4 - Gravetemple: Stephen O'Malley / Oren Ambarchi / Attila Csihar + special guests: Russell Haswell and Crys Cole

No Longer Available

GRAVETEMPLE was formed in 2006 as a side-project of the band SUNN O))) by Oren Ambarchi, Stephen O'Malley and Attila Csihar. The group formed initially to be able to tour in Israel summer 2006, creating several recordings which eventually became "The Holy Down" album, which was released on Southern Lord recordings in 2007. At the time of the Israel tour, the 2006 Lebanon War started and was in action. In Summer 2008 the trio reformed together with Australian drummer Matt "Skitz" Sanders for a short European tour culminating at a headlining performance at Supersonic Festival in Birmingham. In late 2009 the original trio reconvened for a special one-off concert at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts. April 2013 marks the first set of live action since that period, and a new chapter in the ongoing system of the related network. GRAVETEMPLE clearly adapted the aspects more abstract and experimental related to SUNN O))) and has continued from that point, with continued ongoing focus on metaphysical construction of free music and will.

RUSSELL HASWELL

Russell Haswell (born 1970, Coventry) is a cult noise artist who has been operating at the margins of the UK's electronic music scene since 1997. Documented in part via his 'live salvage' series for Editions Mego, Haswell's solo free improvisations for electronics are a heady, immersive experience made even more powerful by the relatively recent addition of phase scope projections that render his sounds as images.

"Noise with purpose. Lean, economical and tremendously exciting" - The WIRE

In addition to solo performances Haswell also has a long running duo with Florian Hecker including works with Iannis Xenakis' graphic-input 'UPIC Music Composing System'.

CRYS COLE

crys cole is a Canadian sound artist working in performance and installation. Active listening is the fundamental core of her practice.

cole’s approach to sound emphasizes subtlety and discretion, guided by a fascination with microsonics that test the limits of audibility and intentionality. By drawing attention to the texture and delicacy of minimal sonic environments, cole aims to create a heightened awareness not only of the sounds she creates, but of the environmental sounds that arise during listening – and ideally, of the listener’s own self-consciousness as a perceptual body and agent.

She has performed extensively throughout Canada, Japan and Europe as well as in Seattle and NYC. She has collaborated with; Jeffrey Allport, Oren Ambarchi, Keith Rowe, Christof Kurzmann, Jamie Drouin, Lance Austin Olsen, Mathieu Ruhlmann, Kai Fagashiski, Julie Rousse, Tetuzi Akiyama, Seiji Morimoto, echo ho, Tim Olive, Christine Abdelnour and Clare Cooper amongst others.
