Radical folk band Stick In The Wheel present the launch of their latest album - a collaborative field recording project with some of the best loved names in English folk music.

Recorded on location, produced and curated by Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter, they invited the musicians to think about what ‘From Here’ means to them - by way of place or geography, or as a way of exploring their musical origins - ‘here's what I am, this is where I’m from’. An investigation not only of the past, but also of cultural identity; what it means to be making folk music right now - these brand new live recordings offer a different way to hear some distinguished folk names alongside lesser known artists.

This weekend of live performances with many of the artists involved will recreate the way the recordings were made - an intimate, raw experience, and the continuation of a tradition which is very much alive and evolving.

Martin Carthy MBE is a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Jon Boden is best known as singer and lead arranger of Bellowhead, the award winning eleven piece contemporary folk band. One of the leading performers of English folk music of his generation, his repertoire extends far beyond the boundaries of the genre and he has an outstanding commitment to social singing, additionally performing in a duo with fellow Bellowhead member, John Spiers.

Fay Hield is a folk singer who seems to have been born knowing how to carry a tune but with the rarer gift of knowing how to go straight to the heart of a song. As an academic, she spearheaded the The Full English project of digitising the first British folk song database, with a resulting Full English band and tour. Most often seen with her Hurricane Party band, she continues to push at the boundaries of our engagement with music.

Jack Sharp performs mainly English traditional music, much of it sourced from his home country of Bedfordshire. More commonly found fronting psych/folk/rock band Wolf People, whom Stewart Lee describes as “peat bog superfuzz sphagnum moss sludge”, and as part of English Folk trio Marisa, Jack & Davy.

Stick In The Wheel - Alan Moore blessed, Rough Trade East picked, Radio X sessioned, Guardian ordained, 2016 nominees for Radio 2's Folk Awards - Best Group & Best Trad Track. Their critically acclaimed 2015 album was pointedly titled "From Here", and From Here a label grows.
