CRANC WITH ELS VAN RIEL

No Longer Available

Cranc are Nikos Veliotis (cello), Rhodri Davies (electric harp) and OTO Associate Artist Angharad Davies (violin), collaborating for this performance with the Brussels-based film and video artist, Els van Riel. Using elements of analog photo and film this performance for 3 x 16mm projectors aims to re-animate old still portraits. The subtle sounds created by CRANC will make them move.

ELS VAN RIEL

Els van Riel lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Studied photo and cinematography, and worked as a photographer, editor and producer for various photo, film, video and theater productions.
Her films, videos and installations explore the impact of detailed changes in moment, movement, matter, light and perception.

“With links to the tradition of structural film making, the work by the Brussels based film-and video maker, Els van Riel, explores the basic elements for cinema -time and light- and develops a form for new esthetical pleasure, bypassing any symbolism and narratism. For van Riel the projector is a central figure in the cinematographical act of giving form to a screening, performance or installation. The mechanical image source becomes actively present as if it were a living object." - Maria Palacios Cruz, L’ART MÊME, April 2009

Angharad Davies violin
Rhodri Davies electric harp

Cranc formed in 1999. They perform infrequently and rarely release any music. They began performing with an interactive, gestural and highly energised aesthetic, as documented on their first CD release, ‘All Angels’. Their second CD, ‘copper fields‘ in 2009 explores calm sonic landscapes. Although they mostly use acoustic instruments, they sound shamelessly electronic.

“Cranc’s improvisations have an alluring musicality, facilitating a listening experience largely unperturbed by analysis. Minutes can elapse without the listener consciously latching onto Cranc’s adroit ensemble approach, which is frequently conveyed in dovetailing whispers and murmurs…As a result, Cranc creates an unlikely deep listening experience." - Bill Shoemaker, THE WIRE, April 2001.
