An evening of two kinds of minimalism, or two kinds of maximalism, depending on how you look at it.
The first London performance of Bryn Harrison’s monumental 75-minute composition ‘Vessels’ for solo piano, played by Philip Thomas, for whom it was written. Released on CD to wide acclaim at the end of 2013, ‘Vessels’ uses interweaving textures and contrapuntal melodic lines to create an almost hypnotic sense of stasis, or aimless wandering. John Eyles described the piece as “just like a maze – fascinating, memorable and intriguing”, and Julien Héraud wrote that ‘Vessels’ has “a sense of eternity, of dislocated temporality. And this sense draws the listener into a unique auditory experience, one that is rarely found in music: to be outside time….Unique and very beautiful.”
Philip Thomas is one of the leading pianists of his generation, and has dedicated himself fully to experimental music. He is the regular pianist with Apartment House, has also played with the Merce Cunningham Ensemble, and has recorded the complete piano music of Christian Wolff, as well as works by John Cage, Michael Pisaro, Christopher Fox, Jürg Frey and others. In June Philip and John Tilbury will record music for two pianos by Morton Feldman.

The first half of the concert consists of the UK premiere of Tim Blechmann’s 30-minute composition ‘Sine Tempore 3’, “for 256 spatially distributed oscillators, realised with 140 lines of SuperCollider code”. Appearing at Cafe OTO for the first time, Tim will realise the piece, mixing it to loudspeakers distributed throughout the Cafe. ‘Sine Tempore 3’ is slow-moving but massive; gradually filling and moving through the performance space like a glacier cutting through and creating/transforming a valley landscape. Korean electronics pioneer Hong Chulki has described it with a certain irony as being ‘almost romantic’.
Tim Blechmann is one of the leading figures in electronic music in Austria. Based in Vienna, he has recorded and released music with, among others, Klaus Filip, Seijiro Murayama, Dieb13, Ivan Palacky, and Manuell Knapp. “Powerful music with very simple gestures” – Richard Pinnell
“A seriously enjoyable hunk of music” – Brian Olewnick.
