Magic Carpathians Project

Magic Carpathians Project is a Polish experimental music group founded in 1998 by Anna Nacher and Marek Styczyński, following their tenure with the legendary ethno-psychedelic band Atman. Their work combines free improvisation with Central European folk traditions, acoustic ecology, and experimental minimalism, yielding a distinctive sound that is both exploratory and rooted. They utilize field recordings, extended vocal techniques, and a broad array of traditional or self-built instruments to create an immersive, ritualistic atmosphere. This approach blurs the boundaries between folk music and contemporary sound art, often coalescing into hypnotic, droning pieces.

Concepts of bioregionalism, sound anthropology, post-folk aesthetics, and ecological resistance underpin the group’s artistic vision. Reflecting their ethos of ecological engagement, Nacher and Styczyński run Biotop Lechnica, a permaculture-based cultural site in Slovakia that hosts workshops and artist residencies. The group has toured internationally and released over a dozen albums in Poland and abroad.

A newly issued LP, Barycz – originally recorded in 2004 and centred around the vanishing landscape of the Barycz Valley wetlands – was released in June by Infinite Expanse.
