The first day across performances and archival materials presents a broad grounding in the breadth of Tudor's work, featuring a screening of Molly Davies' 1984 six channel film Sea Tails developed with underwater recordings by David Tudor and submerged kites by Jaqueline Matisse. Kathy Hinde & John Bowers realise a collaborative performance working with feedback, prepared piano and resonant objects, alongside a piece by Atau Tanaka using modular synthesis in the spirit of Tudor's practise of resonating physical materials. These will be accompanied by short improvisations by Mats Lindström and Joachim Nordwall, and a bandoneon presentation by Mercedes Krapovickas of Pandora's Box, a 1960 theatrical composition by Mauricio Kagel, who first introduced Tudor to the Argentinian instrument and dedicated the piece to their friendship.

A panel discussion will explore several key projects and collaborations developed by Tudor across his life including E.A.T's 1970 Pepsi Pavilion in Osaka, the Rainforest installation series, a 1981 laser concert at the Xenon nightclub in New York and the expansive interdisciplinary landscape proposal for Island Eye Island Ear. Featuring presentations by Valentina Ravaglia (Tate Modern), Gascia Ouzounian (Oxford University), You Nakai (University of Tokyo) & Paul Purgas. Chaired by Jennifer Lucy Allan (BBC Radio 3).

Kathy Hinde

Kathy Hinde is an artist and composer whose practice embraces open methods and evolving processes. Through installations, performances, and site-specific experiences, she aims to nurture a deeper and more embodied connection to the more-than-human world. Composed of hand-made objects, electronics, and a blend of digital and analogue systems, her work represents a cross between kinetic sound sculptures and newly invented musical instruments. She creates pieces in response to specific locations and frequently works in collaboration with other practitioners and scientists, often actively involving the audience in the creative process.

John Bowers

John Bowers works with modular synthesisers, DIY electronics, feedback systems, self-made software, field recordings, esoteric sensor systems, experimental film, and spoken text. He often combines performance with walking and the investigation of selected sites to research an imagined discipline he calls ‘mythogeosonics’. John’s work is primarily improvised and his 2003 monograph Improvising Machines is a commonly cited reference in studies of the improvisation of electronic music.

Atau Tanaka

Atau Tanaka conducts research in embodied musical interaction at the intersection of human computer interaction and gestural computer music performance. His first inspirations came upon meeting John Cage during his Norton Lectures. In the 1990s he formed Sensorband with Zbigniew Karkowski and Edwin van der Heide and in the Japanoise scene played alongside Merzbow, Otomo, KK Null. He is a member of the EAVI (Embodied AudioVisual Interaction) research group, which carries out research across topics including brain computer interfaces, physiological bio-interfaces, machine learning, and auditory culture.

Mats Lindström

Mats Lindström has worked with electroacoustic music, mainly live electronics, since the 1980s. Previously, he was an engineer in the electronics industry and has designed and built several unique electronic musical instruments and devices. He has also worked with multimedia, art and music for theatre and dance, and improvised music. In 1993, Lindström worked as a producer for David Tudor’s last concerts in Sweden, at the Fylkingen 60th Anniversary Festival. Since 2004 he has been the director of EMS, Elektronmusikstudion, in Stockholm.

Mercedes Krapovickas

Mercedes Krapovickas, born and raised in Argentina and living in Finland, is a composer, performer and sound artist with a passion for the intersection of composition, performance and improvisation. With a background as a bandoneonist, pianist and composer, for over two decades, Krapovickas has performed as a soloist throughout Europe and Argentina. Her work explores new techniques and platforms to expand the possibilities of the bandoneon, often in collaboration with interdisciplinary artists such as dancers, lighting and set designers.

Joachim Nordwall

Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Joachim Nordwall has a long history in the Swedish experimental music scene. His career began as a teenager in 1988 with recordings in the psychedelic drone duo Alvars Orkester. His interest in the psychological impact of sound still permeates his music and he has released material on labels such as Ash International, Thrill Jockey and Hospital Productions. He is the founder of iDEAL Recordings since 1998, one of the key Nordic labels for sound art and experimental music.

Molly Davies
