Thurston Moore - two-day residency with Caspar Brötzmann + John Edwards / Adam Golebiewski

No Longer Available

Thurston Moore needs little introduction - an inventive and instantly recognisable guitarist both in his solo work and as a member of Sonic Youth. Thurston has also been a long running participant in and champion of much of the music that we hold dear at Cafe OTO, as well as being responsible for some of the standout nights we've had here.

We're very pleased to welcome him back for what promise to be two very special shows. Wednesday sees Thurston re-combine with the great double bassist John Edwards, in a new trio with Polish drummer Adam Golebiewski, who has played with the likes of Yoko Ono, Mats Gustafsson, Fred LonbergHolm and Ken Vandermark. Then on Thursday, Thurston pairs up with Caspar Brötzmann - a musician he has previously described as one of the best guitar players he has ever met - for a potentially incendiary duo performance.

CASPAR BRÖTZMANN

Known primarily for his work with Caspar Brötzmann Massaker - who were active between the mid-eighties to mid-nineties when Massaker recorded 5 LPs - Caspar Brötzmann returned to live performance in 2010 after a 14 year break with his friends Eduardo Delgado Lopez, on bass and vocals, Danny Arnold Lommen on drums. Returning with equal intensity Caspar Brotzmann Massaker is more than just brute force it is deep, sculptural and timeless music.

"...his attack on the instrument — explosive, obstreperous, large scale, textural, timbral — asserts the material facts of string-pickup-amplifier more bluntly than anyone else currently involved in rock" Ben Watson, THE WIRE

In addition to Massaker, Caspar Brötzmann has recorded solo and collaborated with F.M. Einheit of Einstürzende Neubauten and his father, saxophonist Peter Brötzmann.

JOHN EDWARDS

John Edwards is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others. Perpetually in demand, he has played with Evan Parker, Sunny Murray, Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee, Lol Coxhill, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke and many others.

"I think John Edwards is absolutely remarkable: there’s never been anything like him before, anywhere in jazz." - Richard Williams, The Blue Moment

ADAM GOLEBIEWSKI

Born 1984, drummer and percussionist currently based in Poznań, Poland. He is working mainly on filed of improvised and experimental music focusing on the extension of the range and capabilities of a drumset and percussion instruments in terms of their sound, expression, and anatomy. To him, improvisation in music is an open, amalgam of signature aesthetics, inclusive and characteristic of all the participants; music is thus an instance of conscious praxis of dialogue and compromise. So far Golebiewski has worked with:Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore, Mats Gustafsson, Fred LonbergHolm, Ken Vandermark, Witold Oleszak, Mike Majkowski, Lukasz Szalankiewicz, Mazen Kerbaj, Sharif Sehnaoui and many others.
