A pair of early evening duo performances in the project space, from German cellist Ute Kanngiesser and saxophonist Seymour Wright, and Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga performing on zither with Birgit Ulher on trumpet.
UTE KANNGIESSER / cello
Ute Kanngiesser is a German cellist based in London. Classically trained as a child, she turned to improvisation and experimental music while practicing physical theatre and dance in Berlin. Her strongest associations are with musicians around Eddie Prevost's workshop such as Jennifer Allum, Seymour Wright, Grundik Kasyanksy, Ross Lambert and Sebastian Lexer. She has also worked with AMM, John Butcher, Angharad Davies, Steve Beresford, Paul Abbott, Terry Day, Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill and Guillaume Viltard.
"Ute Kanngiesser's playing is marked by her intense exploration of the timbral possibilities of the cello and her immaculate sense of placement, and a strong, if at times oblique, rhythmic sensibility (...)" - Muddy Ditch

SEYMOUR WRIGHT / saxophone
“Saxophonist Seymour Wright has emerged as the most important saxophonist of his generation. . . [He] shows a command of the saxophone which in contrast to most ‘non-idiomatic’ playing – cynically translated as ‘make your saxophone sound like anything other than a saxophone’ – has deep roots in a tradition of playing that goes back to Frankie Trumbauer, Coleman Hawkins and Willie Smith.” - Brian Morton

DIMITRA LAZARIDOU-CHATZIGOGA / zither
Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga (Thessaloniki, Greece) is a musician and a linguist based in London. She is active in experimental and improvised music since 2006. She plays the zither, a string instrument, and uses ebows and objects on its resonance box to produce sustained or granulated sounds. Her approach focuses on the interplay between spontaneity and elaborate techniques.
In the last few months, she has performed with Mark Wastell as BEFOREHAND and in quintet with Jennifer Allum, Eddie Prévost, Matt Davis and Seymour Wright. She is preparing a duo release with Martin Küchen and is about to launch the online project 'MOBILE #2 OR odds ratio' on Another Timbre with Nate Wooley, Cremaster (Alfredo Costa Monteiro and Ferran Fages), Xavier Charles, Enrico Malatesta and Christian Weber.

BIRGIT ULHER / trumpet
Born 1961 in Nuremberg, she studied the visual arts, which still have an important influence on her music. Since moving to Hamburg in 1982 she has been involved in free improvisation and experimental music. Since then she has “established a distinguished grammar of sounds beyond the open trumpet” (jazzdimensions.de). She works mainly on extending the sounding possiblities of the trumpet by using splitting sounds, multiphonics and granular sounds and has developed her own extended techniques and preparations for producing these sounds. Besides this material research she is especially interested in the relation between sound and silence.
She performs solo, with dancers, working ensembles, and one-time collaborations with musicians from around the world.
