Nate Wooley + Seymour Wright + Adam Linson + Matt Wright

No Longer Available

One of improvised musics most adventurous trumpet players returns to Cafe OTO alongside turntablist Matt Wright, Adam Linson's bass and electronics and saxophonist Seymour Wright.

NATE WOOLEY / trumpet

Nate Wooley is one of the rising stars of the American experimental scene, a trumpet virtuoso whose musical explorations have taken him through ecstatic jazz, free improvisation, drone composition, and noise into a place very much his own, characterised by intense dynamics, an acute awareness of space, and a complex and organic sense of structure. Recent collaborators include John Zorn, Chris Corsano, Akron/Family, Peter Evans, Wolf Eyes, Joe Morris, and Evan Parker.

“A word or two is in order about Wooley’s approach to his instrument. While the spatial innovations of Bill Dixon and Wadada Leo Smith are certainly referenced, the humor of Lester Bowie is also in evidence, and I even hear the chronologically disparate but equally luscious tones of Tony Friscella and Arve Henrikson on occasion. An extraordinary listen.” - Marc Medwin, Dusted Magazine

MATT WRIGHT / turntables

MATT WRIGHT's work includes scores for some of Europe’s finest classical performers, digital improvisation, turntablism, website installations and large events combining DJs, contemporary music performers and interactive media. Music 'at the edge of collapse' is a recurrent theme in his work and he has collaborated with some of the most exciting artists in the contemporary sphere, such as Evan Parker, Francis-Marie Uitti and The Percussion Group of the Hague. He has recently been commissioned to create ‘Totem for Gobi-New York’, a new sound installation for the 2010 MATA Festival in New York City.

ADAM LINSON / bass, electronics

Adam Linson (born 1975 in Los Angeles) is active internationally as a double bassist, improvisor, composer, and scholar, who performs acoustically and with live electronics, solo and in a wide variety of ensembles. He also designs, develops, and performs with real-time interactive computer music systems. He is currently conducting doctoral research in Artificial Intelligence and Improvised Music at The Open University (UK), in the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology. His research interests extend to other areas of musical human-computer interaction, especially phenomenology and cybernetics.

'Adam Linson has arrived at a propitious moment; the 20th Century has dropped behind the horizon, but the 21st has yet to be given permanent shape. He has the expanded skill set and the big ears necessary to make music that stands up to the severest scrutiny now and in the coming decades. His work will undoubtedly be closely monitored by discerning listeners around the world for many years to come.' - Bill Shoemaker

SEYMOUR WRIGHT / saxophones

“Saxophonist Seymour Wright has emerged as the most important saxophonist of his generation. . . [He] shows a command of the saxophone which in contrast to most ‘non-idiomatic’ playing – cynically translated as ‘make your saxophone sound like anything other than a saxophone’ – has deep roots in a tradition of playing that goes back to Frankie Trumbauer, Coleman Hawkins and Willie Smith.” - Brian Morton
