Mike Bullock / Bertrand Gauguet + Joe Talia

No Longer Available

Duo performance from French saxophonist Bertrand Gauguet and US electronic composer and improviser, Mike Bullock. Carefully controlled urgency and mystery, created with alto and baritone sax, modular synthesizer, and field recordings. Riding the line between instrumental free improvisation and electronic soundscape, Bullock & Gauguet trade roles back and forth: at times the saxophone acts as the nebulous ground to the synth’s figurations. Support comes from Joe Talia, a drummer, percussionist and electro-acoustic performer based in Melbourne, Australia. He first established his reputation as a drummer in contemporary jazz and improvised music, fields in which he is now active as a member of the ARIA award winning Andrea Keller Quartet and in numerous collaborative projects, including a long-term duo with Oren Ambarchi.

Bullock & Gauguet first played as a duo in Basel, Switzerland in April 2012; that month they also undertook a tour of several Swiss cities, in trio with cracked everyday electronics pioneer Andy Guhl. In October 2012, the three artists reunited in Fresnes-en- Woëvre, France, for Festival Densités. Mike and Bertrand had first performed together in Massachusetts in 2011, with cellist Vic Rawlings.

BERTRAND GAUGUET / amplified alto & soprano saxophones

Bertrand Gauguet plays alto saxophone within the contexts of both solo and group improvisation. His approach to the saxophone is involved in research on technical areas of the instrument, whether acoustic or related to amplification. Gauguet also composes electronic music: works with film, dance, visual arts and radio. His practice focuses on learning processes related to sound and music - music and non music - sound as support for meditation - breath - the very relationships that sound and music have with image and body. He is also still learning to play shakuhashi after recent trip to Japan. Artists he has played and/or collaborated with include: Sophie Agnel, Christian Barani (film maker), Pascal Battus, Mike T. Bullock, John Butcher, Rhodri Davies, Diatribes, Michel Doneda, Isabelle Duthoit, Andy Guhl, Franz Hautzinger, Robin Hayward, Insub Meta Orchestra, Sophiatou Kossoko (choreographer), Eric La Casa, Thomas Lehn, Lê Quan Ninh, Christian Merlhiot (film maker), Seijiro Murayama, Toshimaru Nakamura, Barre Phillips, Tetsu Saitoh, Christoph Schiller, Roger Turner, Michaël Vorfeld, x_brane.

JOE TALIA / solo drums

Joe Talia is a drummer, percussionist and electro-acoustic performer based in Melbourne, Australia. He first established his reputation as a drummer in contemporary jazz and improvised music, fields in which he is now active as a member of the ARIA award winning Andrea Keller Quartet and in numerous collaborative projects, including a long-term duo with Oren Ambarchi. In the last few years a great deal of his work as a drummer has taken place alongside outsider singer-songwriters (such as Ned Collette, Yuko Kono and Francis Plagne), in groups which synthesize his adventurous, exploratory drumming with the demands of song form. His longstanding musical partnership with Ned Collette has resulted in three records, on which Talia acts as both drummer and producer/engineer, most recently the well-received 2 (Fire Records 2012).

Talia also works in the realm of electro-acoustic composition and performance, working with reel -to-reel tape machines and other analogue devices. Following the release of his musique concrete suite in/exterior in 2006, he established a duo with composer James Rushford. Although the duo’s working methods and sound sources have changed radically between releases (and even performances), all of their work breathes the same peculiar air of lingering obsession and decayed virtuosity. Having worked with extended instrumental timbres and rapid-fire electro-acoustic techniques on previous releases, their most recent LP Manhunter (Kye 2013) develops a unique palette of submerged synthesizers, expiring drum machines and domestic detritus.

In addition to the collaborations above he has performed, recorded and toured with Oren Ambarchi, Ned Collette, Francis Plagne, Jim O'Rourke, Anthony Pateras, Boredoms, Richard Pinhas, John Duncan, The Australian Art Orchestra, Thembi Soddell, Anthea Caddy, Sean Baxter, Robbie Avenaim, David Shea, Marco Fusinato, Rand and Holland, among others.
