First Cafe Oto performance by Swedish musician & composer Magnus Granberg, and his first collaboration with Apartment House. Magnus has developed a unique and distinctive way of combining composed material with large-group improvisation. His work has been highly acclaimed and he has released several CDs on Another Timbre, as well as other labels such as Meenna (Tokyo) and Insub (Geneva).

Evening Star, Vesper Bell was written for Apartment House, and takes as its points of departure two songs from different times: a couple of tiny rhythmic cells from Franz Schubert's Abendbilder served as generators of the rhythmic materials used in the piece, whereas the tonal and harmonic materials all stem from a sequence of chords in Cole Porter’s So in Love.

As in Magnus Granberg’s other compositions, Evening Star, Vesper Bell does not have a master score but consists of independent parts for each instrument, each containing pools of musical materials which the musicians navigate freely with the help of a set of guidelines and their own musical judgments, collective and individual.

Before Magnus's piece there will be a short first half (approx 25 minutes), during which the same ensemblewill perform one of Pauline Oliveros's 'deep listening' pieces.
