Kammer Klang 11 presents a night of contemporary classical, electronic and improvised music, headlined by Isambard Khroustaliov and featuring the music of John Zorn, Mauricio Kagel, Salvatore Sciarrino and Giacinto Scelsi.

Isambard Khroustaliov - OHKA Album Launch

Isambard Khroustaliov is the solo alias of Sam Britton from the electronic group Icarus. Sam trained as an architect at the Architectural Association in London, but took up music full time after securing a recording contract as an undergraduate. Since 1997 he has recorded and released music for a number of independent electronic music labels in the UK and the US (Output Recordings, Temporary Residence, Domino and The Leaf Label) to significant critical acclaim and continues to perform as Icarus (with Ollie Bown) all over Europe. In 2006 he completed a masters course in electronic music and composition at IRCAM in Paris and he is currently researching a PhD in composition under the supervision of Richard Barrett at Brunel University.

John Zorn-Cobra

Cobra is probably the most celebrated of John Zorn's 'game' pieces, guided, large ensemble improvisations via cards indicating style, speed of delivery and so on. This kind of directed improvisation has its roots in the work of John Cage and Stockhausen, performed by October KK performers: Joined by the wonderful Maurizio Ravalico on Congas.

Salavatore Sciarrino - Due Notturni Crudeli (2000-2001) solo piano + Anamorfosi (1980) solo piano

Salvatore Sciarrino's more recentDue Notturni Crudeli(Two Cruel Nocturnes) are not chilled-out lullabies but feature the same explosive extremes and dazzling virtuosity exhibited in his classic Sonatas also for solo piano.Anamorfosi(Anamorphosis) shows the other, lighter, side of Sciarrino’s piano music: crossbreeding music by Maurice Ravel and a song by Nacio Herb Brown, both to do with water.

Kerry Yong

Kerry Yong is a pianist living in east London. He gained a doctorate at the Royal College of Music, playing and writing about piano and electronic music. He has performed at Rational Rec, with ensemble plus-minus, rarescale and Ensemble Offspring. Giacinto Scelsi Duo for cello and violin 1965

Another Italian (b.1905 d.1988), after a break down following the Second World War, Scelsi stopped composing for a few years, and supposedly spent his days at the piano playing a single note. His duo's for violin and cello reveal Scelsi's obsession with sound and tone, from the man himself: "Music cannot exist without sound, but sound can exist without music. Thus it seems that sound is more important. Let us begin with this."
