Human Bell
Baltimore natives Dave Heumann [Arbouretum, Cass McCombs, Bonnie "Prince" Billy] and Nathan Bell [ex-Lungfish] began playing together around 2000 having previously worked on solo pieces for banjo and guitar. Together they found an unusual synergy of writing styles some describe as containing aspects of pre-war American blues/folk, and Middle Eastern and African musics. Early 2008 saw the release of Human Bell's debut self-titled album- a collection of stark vocal-free instrumentals primarily for electric guitar. The album was recorded by Paul Oldham and released on the Thrill Jockey label. This will be Human Bell’s first London appearance.
C Joynes
English acoustic guitarist C Joynes, a resident of Cambridge, uses a heavy thumb-led finger-picking technique that harks back to traditional country-blues and early ragtime, however, he uses this technique to explore alternative melodic traditions: the English folk-tune; North and West African music; elements of classical Indian music; proto-minimalist and impressionist musics from the European classical tradition. Joynes has a penchant for reworking over-familiar pieces and stripping them of their kitsch and cliché. God Feeds The Ravens is C Joynes most recent album out now on Bo' Weavil recordings.
Fuzzy Lights
Combining ethereal drone, brushed folk and quantised cacophony, Cambridge's Fuzzy Lights exist at a critical point of sounds and musical styles. Formed as a duo in 2004, the live band has expanded to a five-piece, resulting in the formation of a wide scope of live soundscapes. Debut album, "A Distant Voice", was finished at the end of 2007, and should be released later this year.
