Join us for an evening of field recording, live performance and experimental sound-making.
Featuring live sets from Kate Carr, Lia Mazzari, Mark Peter Wright and [something's happening] Iris Colomb and Daryl Worthington, the night brings together a range of critical, playful and artful approaches to the field. Expect transmissions, foley, spoken word, improvisation, intervention and action, as artists blur the boundaries between listening and performance; recorded and live environments.
From intimate gestures and found sounds to live manipulation, voice, movement and unexpected interventions, the event invites audiences to experience field recording as more-than-documentation, foregrounding its potential as a mutable, unruly and crafty practice.
The evening will celebrate the launch of Mark Peter Wright’s new LP, Field Crafting, released on Flaming Pines. The record will be available to purchase on the night, alongside a selection of other Flaming Pines label releases and merchandise.
Kate Carr is a London-based sound artist and researcher working across composition, performance and installation. Her practice explores field recording as both a creative method and a way of understanding relationships between people, environments and technologies. Through recording, listening, performance and the construction of instruments from discarded materials, she examines the ambiguities of recorded sound and the shifting boundaries between documentation, fiction and encounter.
Central to her work is an ongoing practice deploying recording protocols: score-like systems, actions and constraints that structure how recordings are gathered. Her work draws on the sound of public spaces, infrastructural vibrations and hybrid environments.
Carr performs internationally and runs the sound art label Flaming Pines. She is a member of the duos Rubbish Music (with Iain Chambers) and Quartz Sand (with Cath Roberts).

Lia Mazzari is a sound artist and researcher working with open-source sound transmission technologies in environmental research as unique tools for alternative ‘live’ models of listening, responding to, and composing with more-than-human environments. Her solo and collaborative works span activist radio labs, cryospheric sound transmissions, whip cracking performances and experimental cello concerts. Winner of an Oram Award in 2022, Lia has developed works for Tate Modern/Britain (UK), Biennale Gherdeina (IT), Zone2Source Gallery (NL), South London Gallery (UK), V&A Dundee (UK), Q-02 (BE), and Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts (IN). She is currently an AHRC/Techne-funded PhD candidate at the Centre for GeoHumanities/Department of Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Mark Peter Wright is an artist, writer and self-described “suspicious listener”. His practice combines performance, installation and publishing to explore the poetics and politics of sound and listening. Working in the traditions of documentary and site-based research, he explores the relationship between sound recording, ethics and artmaking through interventions and actions that produce a critically playful approach to field encounters. He has exhibited and performed internationally and published widely across a variety of analogue and digital formats. His monograph, Listening After Nature: Field Recording, Ecology, Critical Practice is published by Bloomsbury (2023).
[something’s happening] is the sound and text duo of poet and performer Iris Colomb and sound artist Daryl Worthington (Beachers). The project explores textual and sonic permutation through improvisation, scores and responses to situation and context. Their practice is centred around an integrating of sound and language, the two emerging together in unison rather than one leading the other. Their previous work has included experimental translations fused with site-specific field recordings, responses to art exhibitions as well as a live, fully improvised performance practice wielding poetry, processed voice and electro-acoustic sounds made with a variety of instruments and non-instruments.
In 2025 they released the albums Buzz (Flaming Pines) and a map has always been an attempt (Strategic Tape Reserve).
Their first release, an album of single-take live improvisations recorded with a solitary mic in a practice room, ‘Something Like That’, was released in May 2022 by Sensory Leakage. Their second release, 12.10.22, a recording of a live performance from October 2022 at Cafe Oto was released on the venue’s digital label Otoroku in 2023. In 2024 they were commissioned by EMALIN Gallery in London to respond to Adriano Costa’s exhibition HOW GRANDMA TAUGHT HOW TO KILL A GHOST CHICKEN.
[something’s happening] have performed with Eric Chenaux, Mai Mai Mai, Dali St Paul’s EP/64, Neo Geodesia and many more, for promoters and venues including Café Oto, Baba Yaga’s Hut and Upset the Rhythm.
