Two duos spotlighting virtuosity in electro-instrumental improvisational settings with;

DJ SNIFF and KEIR NEURINGER

share a passion for expanding their instruments beyond cultural preconceptions and musical conventions. Their performances move sometimes capriciously, other times unnoticeably between elements of free jazz, hip hop, and ambient plunderphonics, placing turntable and saxophone virtuosity amidst vinyl and cassette tape playback, looping and scratching in the context of self-built hardware and software and analogue monkey business. REDGATE and WRIGHT's improvised dialogues draw together splintered fragments of the ‘new complexity’, hip-hop, sound art and experimental traditions, whilst at the same time side-stepping neat catagorisation. A shared fondness for graffiti goes some way to explain the chaotic lines in their driving, relentless music.

DJ SNIFF (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) believes in the instrumental autonomy of the turntable and the musicianship of the DJ. As a university student he was active in the underground electronic music scenes in Tokyo and New York before moving to Amsterdam, where he is artistic director at STEIM, researching and developing new hardware and curating concerts.

KEIR NEURINGER (New York 1976) is a composer and performer (saxophone, voice, electronics) who has cultivated a personal and intensely physical approach to solo saxophone performance that both honors and eschews diverse music-making traditions. He lives in New York.

ROGER REDGATE is conductor and artistic director of Ensemble Exposé, with whom he performs regularly at European festivals and on BBC Radio 3. He has worked in the fields of jazz, improvised music, performance art, film and television (including programmes for the BBC and Channel 4). His compositions have been performed extensively throughout Europe, Australia and the USA and he has received commissions from the BBC, the French Ministry of Culture, the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, the Venice Biennale and Ensemble 21 New York.

MATT WRIGHT's work includes scores for some of Europe’s finest classical performers, digital improvisation, turntablism, website installations and large events combining DJs, contemporary music performers and interactive media. Music 'at the edge of collapse' is a recurrent theme in his work and he has collaborated with some of the most exciting artists in the contemporary sphere, such as Evan Parker, Francis-Marie Uitti and The Percussion Group of the Hague. He has recently been commissioned to create ‘Totem for Gobi-New York’, a new sound installation for the 2010 MATA Festival in New York City.
