Innovative Poetry & Music Events at Cafe Oto, Dalston

London’s Caroline Bergvall and the visiting Montreal poet Erin Moure will perform their writing, with music from London-based musician Roshi.

All three performers are highly regarded innovators in their fields with already established reputations, who a wider audience will find exciting, engaging and simply pleasurable. All three share too a common interest in mixed cultural inheritances coming from their various backgrounds.

Caroline Bergvall recently took part in the Serpentine Gallery’s Poetry Marathon. Her poetry involves performance and multi-media, and builds often on her background as “French-Norwegian, based in London”. Caroline combines a highly influential position in avantgarde British poetry with academic distinction – she is currently recipient of an AHRC Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts. Other recent readings or performances have been at Museum of Modern Art (NY), Dia Arts Foundation (NY), Tate Modern, Museum of Contemporary Arts (Antwerp), Gothenburg Poetry Festival (Sweden).

Erin Moure is visiting Britain promoting her two new books, “Expeditions of a Chimaera” (with Oana Avasilichioaei)(BookThug) and a volume of essays covering 25 years of practice in poetry, “My Beloved Wager” (NeWest). She is a highly regarded and well known poet in Canada. Her writing also takes off from a hyphenated background (her father was a Galician from Northern Spain), and explores language, languages and identity with always fresh creative moves. This will be her only public reading in London on this visit.

Born in Wales to Iranian parents, Roshi Nasehi, is a singer -writer who presents her own evocative songs alongside sometimes quite radical interpretations of some of the Iranian songs she was brought up listening to. Roshi’s songs reflect her origins, influences and experiences in a personal and unique way accompanied by unusual piano or keyboard arrangements. When she interprets Iranian song it is in a personal style bringing a contemporary twist combined with an authentic understanding of context and language. Her debut EP Roshi feat. Pars Radio “And Stars” was described by Mixmag as 'stunningly beautiful Welsh-Iranian electronica torch songs' and a 'stone cold classic EP'. She has had a new CD out in October with her band Pars Radio, “The Sky and The Caspian Sea”.
