Cry Parrot Day 1: Muscletusk + Whilst + Andrew Paine

No Longer Available

Glasgow-based producers Cry Parrot hit Cafe Oto for the first time, presenting an exclusive two-night line-up of adventurous new music from the Scottish underground - supported by funds from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. For the last 7 years Cry Parrot has been playing an essential role in nurturing grassroots experimental and cross-genre music from the Scottish underground, as well as playing host to an array of global talent. Best known for their Music Language Festival – a Glasgow based multi-venue festival described by Clash magazine as "an invaluable snapshot of Scotland's music today, a scene that is still one of the most vibrant and diverse in Europe, if not the world" - they have celebrated the work of countless Scottish artists, and have toured their eclectic remit to Suoni Per Il Popolo in Montreal and MADE Festival in Umea.

Each night will see 3 acts play their Café Oto debut. Taking in experimental pop, free jazz, feral noise, Lynchian lounge, electronic primitivism and avante-garde solo meditations, expect two eclectic, thought-provoking nights of Scottish underground music, featuring Muscletusk, Whilst, Andrew Paine, Ela Orleans, Tut Vu Vu and The Final Five.

MUSCLETUSK

Edinburgh’s Muscletusk head up the night with their feral noise and free jazz clatter, tying together detuned guitar deconstructions with fields of scuzzy electronic noise, distorted deep horns and loose but barbaric drum work. Often described as the city’s ‘loudest and most abrasive band’, they have shared stages with some of the world’s most formidable live acts and recently performed at Newcastle’s TUSK festival.

WHILST

Formed originally as a jam-based project in the ever-fertile analogue studio ‘Green Door’, Whilst jump seamlessly between free jazz, primitive electronics, dubby post-punk, North African and motorik stlyings, underpinning their sound with a strong punk ethos. This show will be ahead of their debut EP, out in Febuary on Glasgow’s Optimo Music.

ANDREW PAINE

Andrew Paine will open the bill with his idiosyncratic take on song-craft. In a similar vein to his frequent collaborator Richard Youngs, Paine refuses to settle in one genre or style, but carries a succinct brooding and emotive personality to everything he produces. Recent performances have seen him utilize a'cappella vocal meditations, layered field recordings and even a didgeridoo.

This performance was funded through the OTO Projects Promoters and Artists Fund set up to support the creation and delivery of new live events with UK-based musicians. This fund was made possible with support from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
