Music and Other Living Creatures x EnCOUnTERs: Acoustic Commons: How to Make DIY Microphones

No Longer Available

One of a duo of creative/technical workshops led by Soundcamp covering how to make streamboxes using Raspberry Pis (Single board computers) and DIY microphones, streaming to a live soundmap at Locus Sonus in Aix-Marseille. Soundcamp will talk about how these stramboxes can be used for art, science and activist projects, including the Reveil radio broadcast, a 24-hour live transmission of sounds sent in by streamers at first light.

This workshop will discuss how to make DIY microphones with Primo and PUI microphone capsules. These allow high quality microphones to be made from affordable components. Workshop attendees will also field-test the streamboxes, and set up one or more streams for an associated performance at Cafe OTO the same evening.

(There is also a separate morning workshop on how to make DIY streamboxes. Book here.) Tickets to the evening performance are free to all those who book on one or more workshops.

Places available for workshop: 12

Music and Other Living Creatures is a series at Cafe OTO (curated by OTO Projects) dedicated to music about, with, or by other living creatures. Birds, tigers, chickens, insects and many other living creatures are explored through sound-walks, listening sessions, commissioned performances, live responses and discussions.

EnCOUnTERs is a series of inter-disciplinary events that reside at the intersection between inter- and intra-species encounter and the sonic imagination. Events direct attention to curiosity, the speculative as well as the scientific, and to notions of multiplicity of being, experience and philosophy surveying creative and research-based practices that reference aspects of ecology, ethology and other creature-ologies, bioart and bioacoustics, sound/scape studies, zoömusicology, ethnobotany, critical plant studies, and related fields.

EnCOUnTERs is curated by Helen Frosi (SoundFjord).
