Still House Plants

Still House Plants are a UK group made up of Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach, Finlay Clark, and David Kennedy.

From a bare bones set up of guitar, drums and vocals they create fractious and sharp music with a melting pop heart. Bridging elements of sampling, slow core, and repetition the trio have developed a sound that constantly breaks apart and fuses together again, like a chance meeting on the dissecting table of Scritti Politti’s early eps and a 2-step 12” by Lady Legs.

Their latest LP, Fast Edit, released on Blank Forms and bison, was written aided by mobile phones, dictaphones, laptop recordings of rehearsals, conversations, and live shows to create a collage of different fidelities and aural spaces. Things sit on top of each other, fall over one another, or click into place, with hearts on sleeves and spirits in motion.

Notable performances include Empty Gallery (Hong Kong), Hyperlocal Festival (with NTS/British Council, Buenos Aires), Soundtiago (Santiago), zdb (Lisbon), and uh fest (Budapest). 2021 sees the trio perform at Salon de Normandy by the community (Paris, as part of fiac), Gavin Brown’s enterprise (New York), Zebulon (Los Angeles), Canicas Festival (Oaxaca) and Tokyo (with 33-33/mode and British Council). Still House Plants have also undertaken residencies at the CCA (Glasgow), the Pipe Factory (Glasgow) as well as an ambitious six-month residency at Cafe OTO as recipients of the OTO Projects UK artists residency fund, (supported by Jerwood Arts).

Featured releases

A delight to release the live set from experimental songwriters, Still House Plants. Obscured melodies and minimal song structures are suffused with light, off-kilter rhythms and chords, lolloping cymbals and lilting vocals. The trio are so relaxed with each other you might be drinking tinnies with them in their front room. Romantic without tripping into mushy. God bless Glasgow, thank you GLARC and please come back again soon. --- Finlay Clark / guitar David Kennedy / drums Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach / vocals --- Recorded on Monday 7th November by Shaun Crook. Still House Plants – 19.7.16

Pre-order - releases 14th August "Fast Edit is the second LP by Still House Plants, the Glasgow and South London-based three-piece collective made up of Finlay Clark, David Kennedy, and Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach.Written aided by mobile phones, dictaphones, laptop recordings of rehearsals, conversations and live shows, Fast Edit is a collage of different fidelities and headspaces, most tenderly exhibited on album centrepiece “Shy Song”. Overlays of past and current sit things on top of each other, fall over one another, get stuck, predicate. Fitting now, but reflective of a period doing shows in South America. The sentiment of the record is probably best described in part of an intervention written for what would have been the 2020 edition of Glasgow's Counterflows Festival by Frances Morgan:"Getting used to the idea of never getting anywhere except for between these three notes, these two words, getting tired, getting beyond it, getting locked in. Trying to get it down, trying to get it written. Like the song that didn’t get anywhere: it still moves, it doesn’t move.It is getting to you that this is heaviest verb to get across. Loaded and overloaded. Getting as in becoming, as in acquiring, as in catching, as in having, as in receiving, as in changing, as in arriving, as in moving through and over, it’s the same....How do you think we should do this. The song does something different now, puts the other foot forward. How do you know when it’s done. End on a verb and it becomes a command: run! Towards the next thing. Do – towards the next thing to be done. What have you been doing today, a day with nothing doing: watching a nesting falcon on a webcam, what’s it going to do. Googling the appropriate prayer, what does it say you should do. Bouncing the sticks off the snare, what does the sound do. How are we all doing. Doing, never done. Listening, never done."www.counterflows.com/intervention-one/   --- Recorded & mixed by Shaun Crook and Darren Clark at Lockdown Studios, London.
