Sightings' deconstuctionist noise rock removes the melodies and hooks of standard rock & roll, leaving a mash of growls and feedback from the high-pitched grind in the guitar strings to the groan inside a bass amp. It's a destructive post-punk mess that beautifully references weird outfits like Einstürzende Neubauten as well as the early-'80s no wave scene and noisy contemporaries like Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Lightning Bolt, and Ruins. They're joined on the evening by fellow noise rock deconstructionists Temperatures and Jooklo Duo's hard-hitting sax/drums skronk.
SIGHTINGS
Sightings' deconstuctionist noise rock removes the melodies and hooks of standard rock & roll, leaving a mash of growls and feedback from the high-pitched grind in the guitar strings to the groan inside a bass amp. It's a destructive post-punk mess that beautifully references weird outfits like Einstürzende Neubauten as well as the early-'80s no wave scene and noisy contemporaries like Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Lightning Bolt, and Ruins. Sightings formed in New York City in 1997 with Mark Morgan (guitar and vocals) and John Lockie (drums) getting together and jamming. A year later they met bassist Richard Hoffman, and the trio put out a slightly more traditional, straight-ahead rock single on the Freedom From imprint. After realizing their art rock potential and drawing inspiration from the likes of Yoko Ono, Cabaret Voltaire, and Red Transistor, Sightings recorded their self-titled debut, released on Load Records in 2002. The group released two more albums for Load 2003’s Absolutes and 2007’s Through the Panama before switching labels to Jagjaguwar and releasing City of Straw in 2010.
JOOKLO DUO
Formed in 2004, Jooklo Duo is the hard-hitting tenor sax/drums duo of Virginia Genta and David Vanzan.
In the past six years of restless activity, the couple has toured the US and Europe extensively, performing around five-hundred concerts. Jooklo Duo have collaborated with Sonic Youth, Makoto Kawabata, Sabu Toyozumi, Chris Corsano, Paul Flaherty, Daniel Carter, Bill Nace, and many others.
In 2009, they also began working with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, performing on October 2010 for “Nearly Ninety” at the Barbican Centre in London, together with Takehisa Kosugi (Taj Mahal Travellers) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). Now they’re back, stripped right back to the pure skronking duo and hit Cafe OTO as part of a tour wreaking havoc across the British Isles

TEMPERATURES
"Temperatures are a London based duo of bassist/vocalist Peter Blundell and drummer James Dunn, who strip the form back to the bone, relying on the natural properties of their instruments, a handful of pedals and a synth wired up to the drums to create unruly, improvised Noise rock. The obvious comparison would be Lightning Bolt, but Temperatures have a less bludgeoning, more light-footed approach, with Dunn's drumming owing more to free jazz than hardcore, even hints of Prog. But there's an infectious sense of irreverence and adventure that stops them getting bogged down anywhere too long." Daniel Spicer, The WIRE
James Dunn / drums, synth
Peter Blundell / bass, vocals
"they don’t sound much like anything else, rather they seem to occupy some ruptured gap between genres, and they are brilliant. Astonishing fluid polyrhythms topped off with chanted underwater vocals, locked tight in a shambolic shudder, grounded with precision bass kicks. The best new band either of us have seen in a very long while." Freq reviewing Temperatures at St-John-at-Hackney
