Small But Perfectly Formed presents a night of improvised music.
Bertrand Gauguet and Frederic Blondy are two essential members of the french free-improvisation scene for their dynamism (members of many collectives) and the wide variety of the projects they involve themselves with (composed music, installations, collaboration with dancers, filmmakers…).
Tonight they're joined by two musicians you MUST know: John Butcher and Roger Turner.
The night will consist of three acts:
Quartet: Frédéric BLONDY (prepared piano)
Bertrand GAUGUET (saxophones)
John BUTCHER (saxophones)
Roger TURNER (percussion)
Duo of Frédéric BLONDY and Roger TURNER
Duo of John BUTCHER and Bertrand GAUGUET
Bertrand Gauguet, whether he exposes finite details or violent sounds, makes his instrument sound more like guitar feedback and industrial machinery than a saxophone. He has collaborated with Jim Denley, Michel Doneda, Simon H. Fell, Tomas Korber, Andrea Neumann, John Russell... Bertrand also composes music and collaborates with dancers and filmmakers.

Frédéric Blondy's approach to the piano is percussive and encompasses keys, strings and wooden frame. But he can also play gracious spontaneous melodies. He has performed with Paul Lovens , Rhodri Davies , Joëlle Léandre , John Tilbury, Otomo Yoshihide ... and works with the ensembles Hubbub (improv) and Ethos (contemporary music).

Roger Turner is applauded for his precision and speed since he entered the London improvising scene in the 1970s. His restricted drum kit is extended by found objects to create a sound comparable to no other. He’s played with Evan Parker, Cecil Taylor, Otomo Yoshihide, Shelley Hirsch, Joëlle Léandre , Keith Rowe...

John Butcher leads an almost scientific survey of the sonic possibilities of the saxophone while performing improvisation or compositions (he composed for an ensemble of improvisers at the Huddersfield Festival). He has performed with Toshimaru Nakamura, Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill, Steve Beresford…
