Alan Wilkinson / Seymour Wright - duo
Free jazz fire meets radical sonic experimentalism, as pioneering AMM percussionist Eddie Prévost explores two distinct sides of his musical life, performing duos with Alan Wilkinson and Seymour Wright, two of London’s most brilliant but very different saxophonists.
Alan Wilkinson is best known as a high-energy, take no prisoners player, receiving much acclaim for his trio with Steve Noble and John Edwards – “as powerful as The Stooges and as fluid as John Coltrane" (Stewart Lee, The Sunday Times). His highly physical approach to the saxophone blows away conventional expectations and jazz clichés in a giddying array of noise that blurs the boundary between instrument and player.
Seymour Wright delves deep into the innards and history of the saxophone, both dismembering it and augmenting it with radios and other objects, discovering hidden vistas of sound in its secret interiors – “Wright’s daring deconstructions of syntax and instrument alike take the music into a dark, dangerous and hitherto unexplored territory” (
Dan Warburton, The Wire).
The evening culminates in a much anticipated Wilkinson/Wright duo, their first ever musical encounter. On paper it might sound like an improbable pairing, but free improvisation doesn’t happen on paper, it happens in the real, where the improbable often turns out to be absolutely necessary.
