ABOUT LONDON POPFEST

The second ever London Popfest is a gathering of indiepop fans, bands, clubs and labels from around the world. Over the weekend more than twenty international bands will be playing in four venues, London’s finest indie clubs and a host of guest DJs will be spinning the tunes, and there’ll be record stalls, a pop quiz, discos, films and endless pop fun!

ROSE MELBERG

Rose Melberg grew up in Sacramento, but her musical career was honed in the burgeoning indie pop/punk scene of Olympia, Washington, beginning in 1992 with Tiger Trap, a seminal velvet pop-punk group. Rose then formed The Softies with Jen Sbragia. Two guitars with two angelic voices, a handful of singles on K and Slumberland Records and three full length albums were recorded from 1994-2001. She has since made three solo records with the latest "Homemade Ship" being released in the UK by Where It’s At Is Where You Are Records. Now living in Canada with her son, this is a rare opportunity to see Rose's breathtaking live (and only her second London) show.

“Melberg was always pegged as a twee cutie in the past, but a listen to any Softies record shows a songwriter of simple grace with a real ability to cut through the haze of everyday life and hit you where it counts, gently but with lasting effects.” (All Music Guide)

WITHERED HAND

Withered Hand is the musical project of Edinburgh-based visual artist Dan Willson. Withered Hand have made three records. Their Religious Songs EP was recorded at home by Neil Pennycook and released through SL Records and Bear Scotland in 2008. You’re Not Alone is a solo EP, recorded by King Creosote and released through Fence Records and SL in spring 2009. Good News is the band’s first album – it was funded by the Scottish Arts Council and mixed by cult American producer Kramer (Low / Galaxie 500 / Daniel Johnston), and was released by SL Records In September 2009.

“Keep an eye on Withered Hand because on the basis of this very strong debut there’s a good chance that one day Dan will make a clock-stopping album to file next to Moving Up Country, American Water or Farewell Sorrow." (Fire Escape Talking)

THE PINES

Pam Berry and Joe Brooker have been making music as the Pines since 2000 when they had their first release on a compilation that came free with an issue of Papercuts magazine. Over the last 10 years their live shows have been rare and eagerly anticipated things. Joe has also played for the Foxgloves, and Pam sang in seminal US indie types Black Tambourine, the Castaway Stones, Belmondo, Glo-Worm, the Shapiros and Veronica Lake.

“Pam Berry is a legend… a mix of Brit-folk spook and indiepop with her voice emerging from a fog of reverb, echoing Felt and Mazzy Star.” (Magnet)

ROB PRICE (AIRPORT GIRL)

Rob Price is perhaps better known as the lead singer and songwriter for Airport Girl, who have released two albums to date, “Honey, I’m An Artist” and "Slow Light", on Fortuna POP! Records (UK/Europe), as well as numerous tracks on singles and compilations on various indie labels around the world. In their time the late great John Peel, Steve Lamacq and John Kennedy (XFM) have played their songs on the radio, while NME, Plan B, The Guardian, Les Inrockuptibles and Scootering magazine have said kind words.

"Rob Price still sounds like the miraculous bastard child of Ian Curtis and Conor Oberst..." (Subba-Cultcha)
