Door Times : 8pm

We are thrilled to welcome Lubomyr Melnyk back to cafe OTO after a remarkable, sold out performance in January 2012. Melnyk is a pianist and composer and pioneer of what he calls 'continuous music' - an approach to the piano which requires a totally new technique based on extremely rapid notes and note-series that create a "tapestry of sound" usually with the sustain pedal held down to generate overtones and sympathetic resonances.

According to wikipedia he is also the fastest pianist in the world, sustaining speeds of over 19.5 notes per second in each hand and holds the record for the most notes played in an hour. But more than just a technical display, Melnyk's note choices create a personal soundworld of mystical calm.

Lubomyr Melnyk will have original vinyl and CD copies of many of his releases available for purchase on the night.

“Lubomyr Melnyk’s music sounds like nothing else…One of its most striking attributes is its rhythmic complexity, which makes playing it a major feat of virtuosity; polyrhythmic patterns of three and four and seven and eight, for instance, going on simultaneously create an enormously rich contrapuntal texture, out of which new melodies are constantly emerging… Any fans of minimalism and maverick experimentalism with an immensely attractive sound should check out Melnyk’s phenomenal performance of his unique music.” - All Music Guide, Five Stars

We are currently taking expressions of interest for either individuals or for two pianists together of similiar ability to have lessons with Lubomyr while he is in London. This is a very rare opportunity and places are limited. Please email to register your interest.
