L A N D + ROBERTO CRIPPA

No Longer Available

L A N D

L A N D are Daniel Lea and Matthew Waters, a London based duo who have just released their debut album, Night Within on US label, Important Records. It features guest contributions from David Sylvian on vocals, Ben Frost, Daniel O'Sullivan (Miracle and Ulver) and Duke Garwood among others. The album is a vast collision of sound, from free brass and woodwind to "geometric" bowed cymbals and metallic percussion, all sculpted in Reykjavik by Ben Frost, enhanced by his signature aural physicality and visceral sub bass. Lea and Waters describe the work's distinctively nocturnal, urbane and menacing mood as, "approaching an apocalyptic noir narrative".

For this rare live show, the album will be performed in its entirety for the first time with a full ensemble including electric guitars, saxophones, clarinets and drums. There will also be a befitting set of abstract photographic visuals accompanying each track, shot and directed especially for tonight's show by Will Davidson, to provide a fully immersive experience.

Support comes from Italian sound artist, Roberto Crippa on live improvised electronics.

"Stunning, as striking a debut as any that's crossed our path all year, with the highest attention to detail and aesthetic, from the unsettlingly visceral sound design to the wending, lowlit narrative and urbane collision of panicky discord, tight-but-free percussion and glossily rich harmony. Highly recommended." - Boomkat

"This is easily one of the most intriguing and enigmatic debuts to surface this year. Distinctive, beautifully constructed, extremely stylish and evocative." - Brainwashed

ROBERTO CRIPPA

Roberto Crippa is a London based composer and sound artist whose work investigates how human bodies and physical objects respond to architectural acoustics and resonant frequencies. Blending elements of music concrete, improvised electronics, drone and dark ambient music, Crippa's compositions function as self-contained universes that unnervingly transform the physical surroundings of the listener into visceral and immersive aural landscapes.

Using custom analogue oscillators, filters and acoustic instruments such as an amplified zither, harmonium and a range of exotic bells, Crippa's performances both brutally and delicately sweep across the entire audible frequency range: from the lowest sub tones to the highest pitches, his work is rich in contrast as walls of sound awash with opaque noise and subterranean thrums collide with shimmering organic tones and sequenced sine wave constructions.

At once full and empty, expansive and insular, his work derives its energy from the friction between the 'all' and the 'nothing'.
