CHIE MUKAI

Kyoku, percussions, voice, dance …

Chie Mukai studied under Taj Mahal Traveller (and later Merce Cunningham musical director) Kosugi Takehisa, playing Kokyu (a traditional Japanese string instrument). She started the legendary improvising unit ‘Ché-SHIZU’ in ’81.

She has played with Tori Kudo, Masayoshi Urabe, Rinji Fukuoka, Jim O’Rourke, Eric Cordier, Fred Frith and Ikuro Takahashi and released a clutch of brilliant sides on Siwa, PSF, Alchemy and more.

Miya (Flute) / Benedict Taylor (Viola) / Terry Day (Drums/Perc)
Miya graduated from Senzokugakuen Music University Jazz course in 2004 and has since been performing and composing music for dance, design and photography as well as concert performances. She is highly regarded in Japan for her expressiveness and improvising ability and has released 3 CD's, the latest 'Oriental Sun' on T&K entertainment.

This will be Miya's last small group performance before she returns to Tokyo. She'll be joined for this show by rising star Benedict Taylor on Viola and improvising legend Terry Day who describes Miya as 'The Real Thing'. This show will also be a VERY rare chance to catch Terry playing drums and percussion - the instruments he started out with as a member of The People Band. This is only the second time he's played them in a small group setting since 1987! Not something to be missed!
