The associated artists programme at Cafe OTO has been set up to support a handful of musicians each year. Using the resources we have we hope to provide a platform to present new works, develop ideas and initiate collaborations. The programme has been made possible through support from the Genesis Foundation.
2012-2013 ASSOCIATED ARTISTS
We are pleased to launch our first Associate Artists Programme with five musicians who we feel collectively represent some of the most interesting music happening in the UK.
Angharad Davies - a violinist extending the sound possibilities of the instrument
Rie Nakajima - an artist working across installation and performance with sound Tom James Scott - composer, instrumentalist and improviser Guillaume Viltard - leading double bassist from London's fertile improvised music scene Alex Ward - composer/improvisor and one of the UK's most exciting and unpredictable players
Angharad Davies is a violinist whose work is situated in the complex intersection of improvised and composed music. She is dedicated to exploring and expanding sound production on the violin, and has developed a specific approach to the violin, which extends the sound possibilities of the instrument by attaching and applying objects to the strings or by sounding unexpected parts of the instrument's body.
Davies is an active performer in contemporary, improvisation and experimental music both as a soloist, within ensembles such as Apartment House and Common Objects, and in smaller improvised groups with musicians such as Axel Dörner, Taku Unami, and Tisha Mukarji.
Her sensitivity to the sonic possibilities of musical situations and attentiveness to their shape and direction make her one of contemporary music's most fascinating figures.
Rie Nakajima is an artist working with installations and performances that produce sound. Her works are most often composed in direct response to unique architectural spaces using a combination of audio materials and found objects.
The works created for the purposes of "playing" the sounds she has in mind
are often placed matter-of-factly on the floor or take the form of assembled objects that serve as sound makers, giving rise to inorganic spaces. Listening to the works in such finely honed environments brings to the surface in a pure way people's imagination, memories, and deepest thoughts.
Nakajima graduated from the Department of Aesthetics and Art History at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and received a BA in Sculpture at the Chelsea College of Art and Design and an MA in Sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Since then Nakajima has exhibited and performed widely both in the UK and overseas.

Tom James Scott is an instrumentalist / composer / improviser currently residing in London.
Scott's early interest in music was informed as much by a fascination with sound and improvisation as it was by traditional musical training, and his work continues to explore both lyrical and abstract means of sound making and composition.
Since 2007's 'Red Deer', Scott's solo releases to date have seen a switch between guitar, piano and keyboard as their focal point (often with the addition of bowed objects and strings, field recording and electronics). United by a preoccupation with modern composition, traditional music, improvisation and song, Scott's recorded work also draws inspiration from visual and literary sources, with certain titles often citing a now largely archaic form of dialect particular to Scott's home county of Cumbria.
Born in 1975 in the North of Ivory Coast, Viltard grew up in the wild countryside with almost no music. Back in France, he played with many artists of the French underground improv scene, including dancers and poets as well as musicians.
After moving to London in late 2007, Viltard has worked with many of London’s best improvisers, forming strong associations with the circle of musicians centred on Eddie Prevost's experimental workshop, becoming a mainstay of the London Improvisers Orchestra, and playing in a great free jazz trio with Tony Marsh and Shabaka Hutchings that was sadly curtailed by Marsh's untimely death.
It is this eclectic appetite for collaboration across the whole spectrum of improvised music as well as his resolutely unamplified and powerfully physical playing that marks Viltard out as one of the most interesting musicians to emerge from London's fertile improvised and experimental scene in the last few years.
Alex Ward is a composer, improviser, and performing musician, working primarily with clarinet and guitar.
His involvement in freely improvised music dates back to 1986, when he met the guitarist Derek Bailey. He subsequently took part regularly in Bailey's Company events, and has gone on to become a major figure in British improvised music.
His current work ranges from the duo Dead Days Beyond Help, in which he plays guitar and sings, his group Predicate who perform his compositions, regular improvising groups with Steve Noble, Kay Grant and others, as well as more ad hoc encounters with musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Joe Morris and Duck Baker.
He brings a unique energy and inventiveness to all these projects, elevating them far above the ordinary and injecting them with a thrilling sense of danger and possibility.
