Kanako Horiuchi

 

Born in Hokkaido at 23 Kanako Horiuchi moved to Okinawa and become an apprentice of Oshiro Misako who is one of the most respected and famous Okinawa folk singers and also owns Shimaumui bar. Kanako has been working as “young mama san” at Shimaumui, the singing bar where all the staff are trained to perform traditional and modern Okinawa music to or with customers.

 

Kanako has been touring all over

Japan and the world with Oshiro and in 2006 she was awarded the best academy position at Ryukyu Minyou Kyoukai, Okinawa traditional music society.

 

Kanako has worked with Haruomi Hosono (Y.M.O) and she also sings Showa Kayo, popular music from Showa era with Koichiro Katori (PAAP) and recently she has released CD “Lovers Ska” in which she covers J-Pop tunes remixed with Okinawa folk music and the sounds of Ska.

 

Tonight Kanako will be performing solo as well as with the London Okinawa Sanshinkai.

Rodrigo Montoya, a Brazilian musician who improvises with Shamisen, an instrument from Aomori, North Japan will also be performing a solo set.
