After an extraordinary three-day residency at Café Oto earlier in the year Peter Brotzmann is back with his trio Full Blast and special guest saxophonist Ken Vandermark!

Since the sixties Brotzmann has been one of the most important and uncompromising figures in free Jazz working with everyone from Don Cherry to Keiji Haino. Brotzmann first trained as a painter and was associated with Fluxus before teaching himself the saxophone and establishing himself as one of the most powerful and original players around.

In this trio his associates are bassist Marino Pliakas (Switzerland/Greece) and drummer Michael Wertmueller (Switzerland/Germany).

Here’s what people have been saying about Full Blast:

“ ...Brötzmann’s current trio consolidates his position on the front line of possibilities... Peter Brötzmann, the big bad wolf of jazz, came to London, and he huffed and he puffed and he blew your house down. A standing ovation coaxes the clearly exhausted trio back to the stage ." - (Sunday Times, London Jazzfestival)

“FULL BLAST frequently conjures the essence of Brotzmann's landmark early Free recording "MACHINE GUN" in it's visceral intensity. Herr Brö himself refers to FULL BLAST as "THE TRIO" - (Atavistic)

"There was nothing to do but surrender to this amazing performance, expressing the artist's total, uncompromising belief in the sheer physical power of sound to transform the listener—tons of deafening yet paradoxically blissful sounds that keep me smiling even now when I think about this exceptional trio. "Will the music ever end?" Not when played at this intensity!" - (Eyal Hareuveni, All About Jazz)

“ ...for you to sink your ears into over and over again. This is free music at its best: fire, fun, and further exploration of the heretofore unknown." - (Tom Jurek, whole review: All Music Guide)

“ ...God bless European audiences." - (JazzTimes)

“...Berlin’s greatest underground jazz party since years." - (Christian Broecking, TaZ)

“NYC performance of the Year 2007" - (All About Jazz New York)

KEN VANDERMARK

With his appearance here at OTO with Paal Nilssen-Love still resonating in the cortex, we're very happy to announce that saxophonist Ken Vandermark will be joining Peter Brötzmann's Full Blast Trio for their two day residency on the 29th and 30th of September.

Vandermark has been seriously exploring the possibilities of improvised music since the 80s. He's well known for his work with his own quintet the Vandermark 5, the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Freefall, the Territory Band, Spaceways Inc., and the DKV Trio. In 1999 Vandermark was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship putting him in the company of Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton and Max Roach.

Aside from the schools of music influenced by the history of jazz, his music has been greatly impacted by sources like “Mississippi” Fred McDowell, James Brown, John Cage, the Ex, Gyorgy Ligeti, Sly and the Family Stone, Morton Feldman, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and various traditional musics from around the world.
